macoduck Posted December 5, 2023 Share Posted December 5, 2023 Born on August 12, 2012, she was hunting dog in Spain and later a brood mom before be turned out to fend for herself. Casa de Postas shelter took her and found that she had heartworms, ehrlichia, and anaplasma. After nine months of treatments she was deemed clear and ready for adoption. Leela joined our family on Sept 26 of this year and from the moment she got here this girl was a hoot. She quickly learned where the cookie jar was and if hubby or I were near it she would give us persistent nudges toward. She quickly became NoAh's best buddy and would spend hours on squirrel patrol with him. Her crooked tail never stopped wagging, until this weekend. No interest in squirrels. Not wanting to eat. We were used to her wheezing at night from the heartworm damage, but she had become silent the past two nights. She no longer had the ability or energy to take full breaths. The soonest I could get a vet appointment was in two days, but last night she let us know she was ready to go. We couldn't even get her to lay down as it put too much pressure on her chest. She did walk down the hall to my hubby's room and stare at his bed - she loved sneaking in there and claiming that bed for her own - but she didn't have the strength to jump up. The emergency vet confirmed her lungs were compromised now by the heartworm damage. At least there was no fluid. But she said at this point there was no treatment. December 4, 2023. Gone too soon. We should had a few more years with her. Her transformation from horribly emaciated to happy (that second photo speaks volumes) happened thanks to wonderful groups like the Senior Sighthound Sanctuary and fosters and adopters like you. I am so glad that Leela got to live her last months at the House of Duck. She couldn't have landed in a better home. I wish so much that you'd had more time together.
