macoduck Posted December 31, 2017 Share Posted December 31, 2017 (edited) Allen (M's Pretty Boy) He came in with little fanfare and went out with the same.His original mom was moving into assisted living and he needed a new place to call home. She entrusted his care to Triangle Greyhound Society of NC, and from there he found his way to our home in of March 2017.We knew Allen had medical challenges. During a dental he developed malignant hyperthermia that spiked to 109.1. After that he would shake so bad at vet visits that his temperature would climb.When my vet microchipped him, Allen suddenly started bleeding. She had not hit a blood vessel. His clotting factors tested normal, both weeks before and during the event. He bruised and swelled from groin to chest and down one leg. It never bothered him a bit and gradually went away.In late summer I noticed an area of Allen's skull starting to sink in. It was a real puzzler for my vets. An xray and a consult with Dr Couto provided a diagnosis of a nerve sheath tumor. It wasn't in his brain, but rather, wrapping around nerves and causing muscle wasting. It never bothered Allen at all. It's visible in one of these photos, just above his left eye.As old age will do in our greyhounds, Allen's hind end became very weak. Symptoms did not appear to be LS. Something was wrong with some disks. We'll never know for sure because to have xrayed him would have been the worse kind of torture.This sweet, loving boy loved shoes but he never chewed them. To him shoes were a "welcome home mom and dad!" gift any time we'd left and returned to the house - be it going to the store or walking to the mailbox. Length of time gone didn't matter, but celebrating our return did.I kept my slippers beside my bed since at least one of our dogs would need to go out in the middle of the night. Not Allen though, he slept like a log and never had a potty accident in the house. Often he would wake up early and steal a slipper or two, just to let me know that he'd beaten my alarm clock. I'd put my feet to the floor and clomp down the hall to fetch my other slipper from the living room, finding it snuggled next to Allen.The morning after Allen left us was the saddest morning of all because both of my slippers were by my bedside, untouched.Allen, you were a very good boy. My angel Snowy used to collect shoes in his bed. The simplest of things affect us deeply when they aren't here with us anymore. So deeply sorry for your loss.
