DIEGO (“Brute Force” January 16, 2005 – January 3, 2017)

Our beloved Diego left us quite suddenly this afternoon. The routine in the last months has been to take Diego out by himself for last potties since his lumbar stenosis was gradually getting worse and we didn’t want the other hounds to jostle him. When he came back in he would normally jump onto the couch so he could have a snuggle with his favorite person, his Daddiman, before bedtime. Just after midnight of New Year’s Day (so early morning of January 2nd) we let the dogs out for last potties but did not find Diego on the couch but lying on the dog bed in front of the couch. It was obvious that his lumbar stenosis had acted up and he could not get on to the couch. He had had a minor episode a couple of months ago, but was on his feet again 12 hours later. So we expected the same to happen again. It did not, this time his LS really acted up. He could not get on to his feet. A year ago we had already determined that he wasn’t a candidate for surgery (did not tolerate his last two dentals’ anaesthetic well) or a DP shot under anaesthetic. And now, being two weeks away from his 12th Birthday, age was a factor as well.

We took him into the vet this morning and she determined he was ready, as we had told her. He went so quickly, within seconds of receiving the sedative that we knew he was ready to go. Run Free, Diego, Run Free.

Tomorrow, January 4th would have been his 8th Gotcha Day. We had been to a M&G and Diego leaned against Michael for about an hour, ignoring others. On the way home I said : "I think that Greyhound just chose you to be his new Daddy." The rest was history.

Losing three hounds in less than six months is enough, it can stop for a bit now.

Very very sorry for your loss. I think there is no time that will ever be long enough for us and our beloved family members. 3 in 6 months would send me over the edge,,hang tough. I vote it stops too.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Those Gable Dodge kids know about picking their families. Rocket leaned on me for over 3 hours at a M&G and wouldn't go see anyone else who wanted to meet him.

Run free, Diego. :f_red
