We came home last night to her whimpering in the bedroom. She must have jumped off the bed and broke her rear leg between the knee and hock. The skin was ripped and leg dangling. X-rays confirmed osteo. I am sure that she jumped when she heard our car turn the corner . She sun bathed and watched the street from the 2 windows adjacent to the bed. 2 days ago she was running like banchee, catching tennis balls and stalking Felix as always. She also took 2 long, 4 mile walks earlier before the cold weather set in. Did she get a hairline fracture due to the osteo? Most likely, did she get a hairline fracture when she mauled her leg running into the bamboo fence fighting 2 weeks ago? Maybe, we shall never know. Annie showed no pain until this horrific break. We couldn't tell, she seemed as happy and energetic as always. As always she would bark at anything that passed our house. What a good dog, we just couldn't let her be uncomfortable and go thru amputation (it was a really bad break) or have one day in pain, not our Annie . Joe and I are both shell shocked, when we left yesterday she was fine, perfectly fine. Our hole digging, barking, Akita hating (she always went ballistic at any Akita she passed or saw from afar), cat stalking dog has become another victim to that awful disease, we see too often.
