Guest TexasGreytMom
Today we sadly enabled our sweet, gentle and loving angel to cross over and wait, pain-free and happy, for us at the Rainbow Bridge. Shelby came into our lives 7 years ago when she was just 3 years old. She left us today due to osteosarcoma in her shoulder. But, we choose not to dwell on the end of her life. What will remain with us instead are the years of fun we had with her that began on April Fool's Day 2009 as we sat in the office of GPA-Houston and waited to meet potential new family members. Out of the corner of our eye we noticed her wandering thru the office, sniffing curiously and energetically. We asked to meet her and we bonded instantly. She was warm, friendly, and LOVED to be petted. When petted, she would instantly freeze and stand perfectly still until you stopped petting her. As the GPA office staff completed paperwork and searched for documents, I watched her as she stealthily and quietly would reach up on a nearby desk and, undetected, pull a piece of paper out of a stack of documents. She would snatch the paper and retreat to her bed on the office floor and methodically tear the paper into a thousand pieces. I didn't dare share this info with hubby, as we were smitten with her and I didn't want anything to stand in the way of her becoming our family member. It was a secret Shelby and I shared ... at least until we got her home. Once she was comfortably settled into our family and our home, it didn't take long for her paper obsession to surface again ... in hubby's home office. But, he loved her so much that even after destroying important paperwork, he couldn't be angry with her. She only had to look at him with those huge dark brown eyes and he melted. She totally owned our hearts. We are forever grateful for the 7 amazing years we had with her. And, more than anything we are thankful that we were able to take her on a wonderful travel trailer road trip from our home in Texas to California last year. Shelby was able to play with her sister on Ocean Beach Dog Park in Ocean City, CA and swim in the lakes at Bottomless Lakes in Roswell, NM. She ate doggie entrees at beachfront cafes along the Pacific Coast Highway. Letting her go was one of the most difficult decisions we've had to make so far - we didn't want to wait too late or rob her of any remaining good days by letting her go too soon. As it turned out, she let us know – we could see it in her eyes. She was tired and uncomfortable and the light and spark was no longer there. She stoically walked into our vet clinic with her sister (Mia - our pit mix) and we knew we made the right decision. She comfortably and peacefully crossed over with us by her side. Leaving without her was surreal and her sister was confused. Our home is empty and too quiet. We’ll miss her howling bark greeting as we return home to her. And we’ll miss the excitement of seeing her tear into her Christmas stocking treats. There are a million other things we’ll miss about her. But we know that we'll be fine thanks to all the sweet memories we have of her and her antics. And in a few short weeks, her ashes will be back home with us. When she adopted us, we were fortunate that we also received her racing collar with her brass nameplate. When the oak box containing her ashes arrives, hubby will affix her racing collar nameplate to her oak box. Our sweet girl will be in our memories and our hearts forever, and we’re looking so forward to the day we’ll see her again. We love you and miss you, Shelbers, Shelberito, Burrito … our baby girl.
