Beachbum1
Jagger, at age 13, and with Facebook and I almost 5 years, started limping a little bit, around 7 weeks ago. I got him into his vet, and the vet isolated an area of discomfort in the area of his upper front left leg. X-rays show an area of concern in the bone. Started him on pain medication. For the past year, Jagger had been an absolute mess at any vet visit, and would take him a long time to calm down. We went back to the vet after 4 weeks for new x-rays, and the area was bigger. A "working diagnosis" was Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). The most painful of all cancers. I made the decision to only do palliative care, trying to control pain. Aware that a break of the bone could happen. Wasn't going to do amputation, radiation, or chemo since that involves LOTS of frequent vet visits. I had experienced Osteo with my first Greyhound, Taylor, at age 6 in 2015. Taylor was a happy, hopping 3-legged hound for almost 2 years, loving and demanding rides and walks 2-3 times a day. LOTS of vet visits, which I knew would be horrible for Jagger. For the past few weeks, he limped, but was eating well, wanted to go for rides and walks, and loved seeing people, and loved to do "dog things". Up until around 7 weeks ago, he was a 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 year old dog acting like a 3-year-old Greyhound. Running around the back yard like a lunatic, digging in his sand pits, playing with toys in the house, always a happy boy. This past Sunday afternoon around 2:30 PM on August 14th, he fell, and let out a yelp, got up and was holding up his front left leg. That leg that the "bad" leg. I called an e-vet, told them we were on our way, drove the 25 minutes to get there, with Jagger laying quietly in the back of my SUV. They brought him in on a gurney; examined him; told me the leg was probably broken due to the deterioration of the bone from the Osteosarcoma, and what did I want to do? I asked if they could do a quick x-ray of his leg, which they did. The doctor showed me the x-rays, and said there was a large area that looked "mushy", meaning the cancer had eaten away a lot more of the bone in the past 2 weeks, and there were breaks showing. I said there is nothing else to do, besides euthanize him, which was done with me petting him, telling him I loved him, and that I would stop the pain. I told him I would be with him, again, too. He passed quietly. He was a wonderful boy who joined Facebook (who is 12 and has been with me 9 years) and me when Jagger was 8 years old and he had been returned to the adoption agency after living with an old man in a high rise condo in South Florida, when the old man went into an assisted living facility at age 80. He and Facebook got along fine, and every single day, the 3 of us were out and about for rides and walks. It's all about quality of life. Jagger had a great life with me. A happy, playful boy. Facebook is doing fine, and I miss Jagger so much, but it's what we can do for them when it's time. I know I shall be with Jagger again, and Taylor, and eventually Facebook will go to the Bridge, too.

racindog
My heart is breaking for you. And oh what a beautiful and moving tribute! Sending love and peace and my deepest sympathy. The Way In the darkness I turned to go; my last day's done; I'll miss you so. No time even to say goodbye or to lock the tears spilling from your eyes. That's when I heard you call my name; I knew right then I must turn back to help ease your pain. Since I've no voice with which to speak, its whispers in your dreams I'll make. Ease your heart and rest your mind, my time with you was the best of kind. I couldn't have asked for a better friend, we've shared our journey to the very end. There's one final thing you need to know, I'll whisper in your ear before I go....."I'm leaving first to find the way...so I can lead you back here with me on your last day." -(SLong)
