Irene wasn't an ordinary dog....and she didn't come by traditional means...In November 2011 I got a phone call from a friend, who happened to be the Director of La Grange County Animal Control. She said, I have a Greyhound. I thought she was kidding. Greyhounds just don't show up to a rural shelter in La Grange, but thinking she was kidding I went off to pick up this so called ""Greyhound"" and Greyhound it was. They had a computer, she had tats. We looked them up and got her info. Too bad the first adopter didn't call the original adoption group to relinquish her. Instead, she decided to tie her up to a neighbors front porch with her rabies certificate in her collar. How nice of her. I picked her up, clipped her ridiculously long nails and gave her some love...but she had a mass on her side...The original adoption group of course immediately got involved and got her to the vet to get her all caught up on an necessary procedures...and remove this mass from her side. The report came back...High Grade Spindle Cell Sarcoma. She was given less than a year. At that point, I decided to make her mine. She was going to live her days with my pack because who would adopt a 7 year old, that had cancer and less than a year? Not just anyone. I loved her...Everyone that met her loved her. She perfected the greyhound lean, and was the 'dummy dog' for countless aggression cases I was charged with the task of rehabilitating..and she played her role marvelously. There's lots of dogs today that are no longer dog aggressive thanks to her. Come to find out when the prior vet records came back..she also had Anaplastic Sarcoma removed a year before. She lived for another 4 years after the last mass was removed. That's 3 years longer than any vet thought she would and she lived her life in luxury. We knew...it was only a matter of time...and almost 4 years to the day I got her she started coughing and I knew...cancer was back...this time in her lungs. Thankfully, the vet gave me a few days to come to terms with it before I had to say goodbye. Irene is now running free with the Chess Pack and I'm sure she was welcomed with open arms....and I know she had a conversation with Pawn because the next day, on the Birthday of the Chess Pack she sent a sign...but I could tell she didn't do it alone...and I suppose that post will be for another forum. Run with winged feet my sweetie...and thanks for letting me know you were okay so quickly.
