MarcR Posted April 19, 2014 Share Posted April 19, 2014 (edited) I said goodbye to my beautiful white brood momma today. I will come back later to write the tribute she deserves. Cleo came to me as foster in 2009 - the "Summer of the C's. First there was Carmella Bucci, then Colby and finally Cleo. Everybody warned me about the magic of the broodie, but I had two successful fosters. I wasn't going to fail fostering (again). Then one morning I looked up from my desk to see this:I knew she had won when I walked into my bedroom to findAnd so began our journey together.Early this year I noticed that she seemed to have lost weight and was not eating well. Routine blood work showed clear signs of kidney problems. As the disease progressed, it became harder to find food that appealed to her waning appetite. She grew thinner and weaker, only being able to stand for a few minutes before sinking into a sit. Still, she would manage a short "sprint" from the back of the yard to the door (about 30 yards). One thing remained constant - she loved her morning yogurt. I knew in my heart that the day she lost her taste for strawberry yogurt was the day we would say goodbye. Sadly, that was this morning.With some help from my son, I bundled Cleo into my car and made the last trip. It took a few minutes, but ultimately she relaxed, nearly falling asleep as we waited in the exam room for her vet. I'm not sure if I was ready, but Cleo was. Her passing was quiet and peaceful. She had just turned 14 last Sunday.Early this afternoon, I believe I got my "sign" I was in the backyard with Myun and Antnee when a red-tailed hawk landed on a fence post not more than fifteen feet from me, something that has never happened before. We looked at each other for a few minutes, then the hawk spread her wings, lifted silently into the air and disappeared from view. For now, I will just say - I love you and will always miss you.
