greysmom
There's always a story. This is Cash's. She was a good racer. The best of the retired greyhounds we've had, winning the Derby in 2006 at Ebro in Florida. She was then moved to Orange Park where she continued winning even up to her last race. We'll never know why she was retired and sent to adoption, but her anxiety probably played into the decision. I came into contact with her first as an adoption volunteer, calling foster families for personality profiles of their foster dogs. Cash was different. And her foster family wasn't handling her very well. They didn't understand why she didn't seem to respond to them, or pay attention to their other greyhound. Why she spent her days staring at the ceiling fan. Why she hid in the closet whenever anyone came over. They couldn't fathom why a dog would be scared enough to jump a baby gate and bolt out the front door in the hubbub of a holiday. But she did. She was gone from their house for five days while people searched for her. She was seen as far as five miles away. Eventually, she was caught when a neighbor spotted her in the street 2 blocks from home. She came to us as a Christmas Relief foster a month later. Within minutes of her being here we knew she was never leaving. She bonded with our first greyhound, Libby, and they became immediate and fast friends. Cash was happy, and becoming settled, eating well and not exhibiting many fearful or anxious behaviors. Unfortunately, Cash's life fell apart again in another month when Libby suddenly passed due to kidney failure. Cash retreated to our bedroom where she spent the next few months. My husband and I were frantically searching the internet, in books, with a behaviorist, and our adoption group for any information that would help us help her. If I only knew then what I know now! I learned so much about canine behavior from Cash, and I became a specialist in *her* particularly. A spook's behavioral cues can sometimes be very subtle - just a fraction of an inch of a raised eyelid could mean the difference between a relaxed dog and an anxious one. I learned to read the tightness in the tuck of her tail, and how folded her ears were to her head. I became an expert in anti anxiety medication. We leash walked her all the time because being free, even in our fenced yard, was too risky if she became suddenly spooked by something we couldn't even see. A breakthrough began when she learned a "watch me" command. It was as if a lightbulb went off in her head. Soon after that, she came up to me for the first time on her own volition and asked for a pet. I nearly bawled my head off. I'm pretty sure I will never forget that moment. She got a bit better after that. There were ups and downs, times when she was terrified and times when she was nearly a normal dog. We found a combination of drugs that seemed to balance her the best and the good times happened more often. She hated leaving the house. She hated car rides. But she would tolerate both to go to the beach. The instant her feet hit the sand she was a normal dog. Absolutely normal! Kiting around on the end of the leash, paddling her feet in the waves, digging holes in the dunes so she could have a nice nap in a warm wallow. Storms didn't bother her and she even let strangers come up to her without hiding behind me! We seriously considered buying a beach home just so Cash could have those days of normalcy in her life. She was our miracle dog, too. Four years ago, she had a bad vaccine reaction and had a seizure. She was clinically dead in the back of my car when we got to the emergency hospital. I was the one that was terrified then. Our wonderful e-vet managed to bring her back to life, though Cash couldn't stand or walk. When the vet came and spoke to me, she said I should be prepared for Cash to not pull through. Well, that vet didn't know Cash! Three days later, Cash walked out of the hospital and jumped into the car! Cash always had surprises for us. About a year ago, she suddenly began to visit us in the bathroom - something she'd never done before. And a few months ago, she brought me a toy and played catch with me for a good five minutes. She still had challenges, too, but they were more manageable, and didn't seem to debilitate her like they used to. She had long stretches when she was entirely drug free. She was our sweet girl with the softest bunny fur. Our problem child with the loudest bark. Our gorgeous, goofy, funny, obnoxious stuffy killer. She loved cake and ice cream, and turkey sandwiches, and peanuts, and ear rubs. She was smart and oh, so stubborn! I miss her more than I can say. She always got too hot in her jimjams but she looked so darn cute! Before her face started going gray! She was always watching! Frant end happy, back end a little anxious!
