Guest BrindleBabes Posted June 9, 2014 Share Posted June 9, 2014 Last week our sweet grrl Tess crossed the rainbow bridge to meet her friends and wait for sister Grace and her parents. Little Tess (her kennel name) raced as R's Prairie Fire, where she had a respectable career before retiring to Pennsylvania. We met Tess at the Keystone Greyhounds booth at GIG when she tricked me into thinking she was petting her soon-to-be sister, Grace. From then on they were a matched set, double trouble, the Brindle Babes. Everybody loved Tess, but she was her own dog to the end. Well-behaved and gentle, she maintained a stubborn streak that more often than not got her what she wanted, whether it be getting everyone out of bed in the morning, cutting a walk short by taking a sun bath, commandeering 2/3 of the backseat of the car, or getting extra treats and a cuddle. She had a ruff as soft as a bunny and her only concession to advancing age was one white whisker. Tess was diagnosed with osteosarcoma last December. We chose to forgo all treatment except pain management, and she continued to live a full, happy life. Two weeks ago the tumor began to grow. On Sunday, Tess did her final Keystone Strut. By Monday even the promise to go to the park couldn't get her off the bed and we knew it was time to say good-bye. As my friend Lee (the author of Greyhounds for Dummies) would say, "better a week too soon than a day too late." "Gone but never forgotten. Loved forever.
