I can’t thank Rachel and Sweep (RIP) enough for all of their support through this. Not sure what I would have done without texting Rachel though the lead up to amp and especially post amp. This community is incredible. I know I’ll need more support as we go through chemo and the Torigen vaccine, so I’m very thankful for everyone here. Truly. 💞

:blush  I've been happy to help. No one should have to go through this alone. Despite the terrible way the members of the osteo club acquire their knowledge and experience, it is truly inspiring to see how everyone lends support and advice. I would have been lost without this forum!

There was a time when we were going through full and active Osteo threads every 2 months.  I don't know if it's the GT viewership that's fallen off, or simply less traffic, or less need for it, but this particular Thread has been going since 2016.  If we can be of any help, offer any support, we're here for you.

Plus, though it's sad in a way, my experience with osteo was back in 2011 with Dude, and not much has changed regarding treatment options since then.   I'm hoping you'll keep us informed along the way as you go through this immunotherapy treatment!

Go Tessie!!!  :beatheart

I absolutely will! The Torigen vaccine has already made it back to my oncologist. We are starting with chemo next week, followed by the first Torigen shot a week later.

Is it normal for her stump to be a little bit twitch?

Today is the first day without an appetite stimulant. She hasn’t wanted to eat much. She’s been a bit whiny and acting like she’s sore. Maybe her other legs are sore or stiff as she’s adjusting to using them differently.

She let out a couple of good screams today too, including a nice series with good range outside so now the neighbors have proof that I torture my dogs. 😝

Taylor stayed on his appetite stimulent, Mirtazapine, till he went to the bridge 2 years later.  His vet there was no "downside" to taking it daily, and he always had a great appetitte.

Everything is normal right now.  A new normal will kick in in a few weeks, then you'll be able to judge her mood and pain level better.  It's also a series of steps forward and steps backward, good days and bad days.  What meds is she taking now?

She’s on carprofen and Gabapentin I stagger so that they wear off at different times. I wonder if her remaining back leg is sore from carrying all the weight now. I did buy some canned tripe today so hoping that helps with the appetite.

Did anyone do PT to help them strengthen as they adjust to life on three legs? Underwater treadmill? Acupuncture? Chiropractor?

We did weekly acupuncture for a couple months after Dude's amp, then switched to weekly canine massage.  If you have easy access to a good PT clinic I would think it would be really helpful.  It's all about helping keep their muscles supple and strong, and their spine and structure aligned for proper motion.

How soon after the amp did you start with acupuncture? We have plenty of great places around here, including a specific canine rehabilitation center around the corner from our specialist who offers a whole host of things.

I don't remember exactly, but soon - maybe a couple weeks or so.  Mostly I was concerned with phantom pains and general pain control, and the acupuncture seemed to help a lot with both those issues.

We have a water PT place fairly near to us, but he couldn't do that until his incision healed.  Then he got an infection and had to have a couple more debridement surgeries.  So when he was finally healed we just moved to massage instead.

This place near me is super cool. Large pool for swimming that our airedale loves, underwater treadmills for rehab, and a whole host of rehab options (e-stim, acupuncture, massage, etc.)

Staples are out! She’s cleared by the surgery department to start chemo on Thursday. She’s also cleared to get back on the couch. She’s very happy in her Tess nest.
