Now, unbelievably, you can also add my dog, Walter, who lost his battle to degenerative disk disease one week after losing Blackie to liver disease. Both my beloved companions were 13 years old. Walter was a lab mix who came to us when he was just 6 weeks old. He had already been thru 2 other homes. No one wanted a puppy after getting him. It was their loss, not mine. At that time I had a 6 month old greyhound, Marty, who I was in the process of finding him a canine companion. I was considering another greyhound but then Walter entered the picture. Marty and Walter were like "peas and carrots" we would call them. They were best of buddies. They would hide and chase each other around the garage and crack us up as we watched from the window. We didn't want to interrupt their fun. Even when we took Marty & Walter to the huge dog park, they would seek each other out and play the "garage game" with Walter peering out from the edge of the woods egging Marty to find him and chase him. Then when Marty just turned 5 years old, we lost him to cancer. We were totally devastated. But watching Walter search for Marty thru the house, stop eating and lay depressed for days killed us. Walter taught me the true bond and love dogs can have for each other. Sadly, many human families aren't that strongly bonded including my own. Since Marty's death we acquired other greyhounds. Walter's life continues on with a greyhound in it. But no bond was as strong as it was with Marty and him. So yesterday when Walter's legs and his old body failed him and he began to suffer, my vet came to the house and we sent him to a better place. Later, I saw the trees moving in the breeze but I like to think it wasn't from an approaching snow storm. It was from the spirit of Marty and Walter running by at breakneck speed playing the "garage game" once again. Be free Walter. We love you and miss you. Enjoy a sunspot with Blackie. Nobody can tell me they don't love. They love with their whole body and soul. Thank you for knowing when it was time to say good bye. Godspeed Walter!
