Jake Could Use Your Good Thoughts

Recommended Posts

After 2 plus years of leg swelling, lameness and fever he recovered from an unidentified TBD This poor old man cannot catch a break.

He was diagnosed with Lumbar Sacral Stenosis in December. We pretty much got that under control with Meloxicam, Gabapenten and Anti Flam. He was actually playing over the past week. He isn't the most steady in the back end, his right left leg is quite weak, but he compensates well and is full of life.

When I got home from work on Wednesday, he was fine! Pushed his way to the front of the pack and got his ear rubs then went back to his bed as he knows my routine. :D I went upstairs to get changed and check my email. When I came back down, he looked okay just laying on his bed waiting for dinner. But, when I put his dinner down he didn't get up - very unusual. I called him and he got up but held up his right front foot, then hobbled to his dish. He had a nasy swollen leg in January from a fall that left him with a sprained wrist. So I thought "crap he's reinjured it!" As the evening progressed he clearly strugggled to get up, he couldn't position his back legs to get leverage.

Yesterday I got him up then had to go to work. That's the sucky part of my job as a pre school teacher, someone has to be there to open. I got a supply teacher and came home to find him slightly better - thank you tramadol. I emailed our vet and filled her in. She offered to come in to see him at the clinic even though it was her day off. I really wanted to be sure there was nothing neurological going on. After a thorough exam, during which he gave her hell :lol she agreed that he most likely had wrenched his leg somehow. She really believes that with rest, and TLC he can regain his former mobility.

A friend lent me an assist harness, and that has made a huge difference. It lets me haul his big ole butt up and then guide him around. Now that we have things under control, I can see that only his wrist and his elbow react to pain. That is severely problematic when you are left with only one good leg. I'm also not convinced that one isn't hurting either, if only from the strain. Since this really does look like an injury we are giving him time to heal. I did try no tramadol and just robaxin and his usual meloxicam and gabapentin last night, but he coudln't get up at all unaided this morning. Now that he's had tram he is able to get his back legs under him with some help from Mom. The good think is that he is eating if I just put the kibble on a placemat on his bed. He tries to get up if I give treats to the other two and paws me to rub his belly. At almost 13 with a worn out body, he is feisty. I think it's going to be a long few days but I'm really hopeful we can get him back to full mobility soon.

Prayers and good thought would be appreciated by Jake and his Mom.

If you stuck with this so far, here's a reward - pics from Monday afternoon.

Awww, such a sweetie.

In the first pic it looks like you have set up wide spaced agility weave posts for him to attempt :)

:lol Grandy actually used them that way as she explored them. She's also poked one so hard with her nose it had to be straightened. We plan to fence off that area to landscape. Not sure it's worth the effort, but we have to do something.

I just sent this email to my vet

Jake is eating well and drinking thank goodness. I put a tensor bandage on his front leg to give some support, he is clearly in pain there and hesitates to put it down to walk. I've been getting him up to go out on their regular potty schedule. Jake is hating that I make him get up and tries to go back to bed, but I persist and once he is out on the ground he pees and looks around. Just now he gave himself a shake, and stayed upright! I haven't seen him shake since he got hurt. I let him decide what he wants to do, which is usually go back in. The two steps require assistance and I keep holding on until we are over that nasty door sill. He walked back to his bed without me and lowered himself down without flopping. He's also laying upright and watching what's going on, cleaning himself and generally doing what he usually does. Grandy and Jet have been taking turns laying beside, or on the same bed with him.

Little improvements, but we`ll take them!
