mom2four
Sorry Merlin's tummy is acting up. I hope the U/S will give you answers. I have (had) two greys with upset tummy/diarrhea issues, different problems. I'll tell you about both just so that you know. Diego- Growly tummy, would not eat, and ended up in the ER for a weekend once due to diarrhea and subsequent dehydration. His problem ended up being worms that he had come up with from the track, and the damage they had done to his intestines. De-wormed him really well. He still gets the growlies on occasion and I know how to treat it now- he gets gastro canned food for two meals, then mix with his kibbles, then he's OK again. Jamey- our osteo Grey. He got a bad case of diarrhea after his amp and all the meds associated with it. He is on metronidazole (flagyl) permanently- he is in end stage osteo, so it won't be for years that he is on it, just months! It usually helps him, but he does have loose stool occasionally. Get well Merlin. Quote Tin and Michael and Lucas, Picasso, Hero, Oasis, Galina, Neizan, Enzo, Salvo and Noor the Galgos. LBass
Checking in for news and hoping its good. Kerry, it sounds like you have a wonderful vet and that helps so much with sorting out difficult and complex health mysteries. When will they have the results of the ultrasound? Don't feel too bad about checking with the desk after your long wait. I am way too passive and accepting and was once forgotten in the waiting room of a specialty vet practice for most of an afternoon. They were very kind and apologetic and all that, but it was a valuable lesson to me--a polite question at the desk would have saved me hours and spared poor Piper an exhausting afternoon. --Lucy Quote Lucy with Greyhound Nate and OSH Tinker. Remolacha
Hoping Merlin gets a good report from the ultrasound (no badness!) As you are discovering, once they start with the tummy issues, it is trial and error to see what works and what doesn't. Seems like every dog is different! Time4ANap
We had almost 2 months of similar symptoms with Rocket. The I/D diet did not help him, and we ended up donating most of the bag to a shelter. After ruling out everything else, and taking a 6 week course of high dosage Flagyl with no real results, we turned to the people who run the Greyhound Boarding Facility that we use. They changed Rocket's food to Precise Foundation which they also use as the house food at the kennel. We really thought he wouldn't be able to eat it, as he did not do well on chicken based foods in the past. This food is a limited ingredient food. Wihin a few days his stools firmed up, and after a week to ten days he was completely back to normal. We have been using this food for about 11 weeks at this point, and he has done fantastic on it. His coat is softer than he's ever been, and he does not not shed anywhere near the amount he did on previous foods. According to the people at the boarding facility, they have yet to try this food with a dog having stomach issues and not have 100% improvement. The food has limited distribution, but seems to be in most distributor catalogs and can be ordered by the bag through most pet food stores. They also have a sensitive stomach food as well. I know you are still looking for the root of this problem. When Rocket was sick he got so skinny that I thought he was wasting away, and tried the new food after everything else had been ruled out. I realize that food may not be the issue, but if the I/D isn't helping, I figured you might be looking for another option, and wanted to let you know what worked for Rocket. Guest SoulsMom
I finally pinned the Muffin Head down Ultrasound was normal, with the exception of some Big D in there waiting to come out. I was so worried because the thing they were specifically looking for on Soul's ultrasound was gastrointestinal lymphoma. I'll let Kerry update more later, she's trying to catch up on work AND keep her eyes open after a sleepless night Edited April 20, 2011 by SoulsMom

MerlinsMum
Amber, thanks for updating on my behalf! Thanks to everyone who has been thinking of us. I'm sorry it's taken me a while to update, I was expecting to make it into work this afternoon and I didn't, so I was frantically trying to catch up with my emails. Sorry to hear about Rocket's issues, but thank you so much for the advice on the food! I've made a note of it, because at some point I'm hoping to take him off the I/D. Glad to hear Rocket's doing so well on it So many peeps have posted great info and I so appreciate it. I'm sorry about Jamey I started Merlin back on the Flagyl right away, as soon as I got home. Even though it's supposed to be taken every 12 hours, the specialist told me to give him one at 1pm and then another before bed. Tomorrow he'll get one with each of his usual meals. I'm also giving him Panacur for the next three days. This house is now officially a drug factory Actually one of the things I was grateful for was that the specialist seemed to be of the opinion that it's always good to have some extra Flagyl lying around at home just in case, so although she knew I already had some from my vet she gave me the full 4-week dose and said I should keep the extra stuff at home for emergencies. He had horrible and bloody diarrhea again this afternoon, but the specialist told me to expect that, as she saw it in the ultrasound. She said not to worry too much about it - it had to come out. He certainly seemed very happy to have gotten rid of it afterwards, and his tummy is not grumbling at all, so fingers crossed... KF_in_Georgia
I know the treats are supposed to be okay and very similar to his I/D, but perhaps it wouldn't hurt to steer clear of the treats and just stick to the I/D for a while. Is Merlin at all gullible? I know that if I take a couple of pieces of regular kibble and get all happy voiced, my duo think manna has descended from heaven, just for them. Need a reward for Sam not killing his chiropractor? Feed him kibble. (Look, Sam! Treat!) Need anything to shut up a cranky Jacey? Feed her kibble. (Jacey, snack!) Rumbling stomach? Kibble. Also, if Sam eats a couple of blades of grass before I can stop him, I bring him in the house and feed him a bit of kibble; I'm less likely to find him trying to heave up the grass later. Hoping for a good night's sleep for you both... Quote Kathy and Q (CRT Qadeer from Fuzzy's Cannon and CRT Bonnie) and Jane (WW's Aunt Jane from Trent Lee and Aunt M); photos to come.
