macoduck Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) Pudge 11/22/02 - 4/7/14 Pudge's birthdate was a guess since we adopted her at a shelter. We had just lost our original mutt girl Rosie and my husband wanted another mutt that looked like her. I scoured websites in eastern North Carolina and found Pudge's picture. Gracie greyhound had been with us a year already. She and Rosie had never bonded. Rosie was too old and Gracie battled extreme SA. Still very new to greyhounds I really didn't follow the right protocol in introducing 2 dogs to each other. I took Gracie to the all-breed shelter, brought her inside to meet Pudge, signed the papers and put them in the car. Within minutes they were sound asleep and curled up together. They were soul sisters from the very start. They grew old and white-faced together. Pudge had been in kidney failure for 2 years. That never stopped her from being my protector of things real or imagined: UPS drivers, neighbors, my mother, new dogs (until they'd been with us a few days), and even flies. She's got one cornered in the photo below. We used to joke that it looked like I'd put her in time out. Pudge's health had declined even more quickly in the past 2 weeks. I had to travel out of town because my mom is terminally ill. I truly think that Pudge did not want to die until I was back home. This is a dog who would drag her failing body through fire if it meant she could be beside me. We'd had a checkup already scheduled for today. Labwork showed her kidneys could get no worse. I wanted a few more days. On the drive home at a red light Pudge collapsed. And then again in our driveway. She got up, put her paw back on the door sill. She knew she needed to return to the vet. Pudge used to make the funniest screaming monkey noise during the duration of every vet visit. Not today. I will miss that. I will miss all her vomit that I had to clean up. I will miss all the quirky things about her that drove me nuts. Pudge, go find Gracie........... This makes 5 angels in just over one year. So much loss, too much pain. I want them all back home...........
