Crossed over the Bridge peacefully yesterday afternoon. I'll post a tribute when I'm able. Godspeed baby boy.

I so hoped I would have more time with my sweet Get Em before it came time for him to go. It was apparent last Thursday morning that he was ready so I took the day off to make some more memories and give extra special lovins'. He passed very peacefully a bit after 5 PM surrounded by Susan & me in the back of his van. I call it 'his' van since it was his Christmas present in December 2012.

Get Em came to me at 26 months through the good folks at GPA Emerald Coast. There were 2 greys they wanted me to look at, however when I walked into the kennel his was the first face I saw, laying quietly in his kennel, front paws crossed, and those soulful eyes that melted my heart on the spot. I believe my statement was 'I don't know if that is one that you wanted me to meet but he will be the one going home with me'! Yes, he was one of them and the wheels were set in motion. He joined me the following Friday afternoon and our love story began.

He really was the perfect first, and only, hound. He only had one P&P accident in the house then never again. Get Em walked in to laminate floors and 72" x 72" windows that facinated him! We took a walk in the neighborhood and he so enjoyed all the new smells. He was also a dream on leash.

The following Monday he went to work with me, the beginning of a several year tour of helping in the office and bringing smiles and comfort to the residents of the nursing home. If I was busy the Pastor or one of the aides would come and take him on rounds several time each day. There was also a fenced area in the back where he could run himself crazy. This is also where he perfected his excavations skills in the soft Florida sand! Up until his final week he kept those skills sharp by digging a hole in his turnout pen. First he would dig it out, then turn around and put most of it back in LOL. He would do this several times until it was just right then collapse in the nice cool sand/dirt. My goofy boy at his finest.

Get Em nearly always had his goofy grin on too. He was a happy boy ready to meet each day with gusto. Only 2 things could unnerve him, thunder and being in a closed off in a room if there were people around. The former caused the typical phobia symptoms, the latter caused his destructive side to engage. If there were people he had to have access.

Though it soon became clear that I was his 'people'. A true momma's boy through and through. A friend in Toronto (rickiesmom) reminded me just the other day about the time at Mountain Hounds in 2012 when she was taking him to the vending area across the street. Mary, her girl Jaynie and Get Em made it across the street then he turned around to stare at the hotel and made it very clear he wasn't going a step further without his 'people'. Such a goober!

From the beginning until just a couple of years ago he was a champion M&G'er. He was delighted about meeting any human, male/female, animal, big, small, fluffy, winged or just fuzzy was meant to be met with that goofy grin and wagging tail. Only in the last few years did he decide that he'd put his time in as a M&G hound and would rather just be at home or wherever he & I happened to be as long as he didn't have to stand around in the same spot for more than a few minutes and I respected his wishes on that activity. Don't we all cave to those big brown, or amber, eyes?

To call him medically challenged would be an understatement. Time after time again we'd get past one health hurdle only to be faced with another. That's okay though. I was his 'people' and I made a commitment to him upon adoption that I would do whatever it took to keep him happy & healthy. And it worked for many, many years. Last week was his final challenge that I was helpless in facing. It would be unfair to my baby boy to do anything else invasive to his aging body. We shared a good run over almost 10 years and I wouldn't trade them for anything. He was my best friend, my baby boy, my goober and my goofy dog and I loved every one of those identities that he shared with me. I also miss them terribly. As Batmom stated Get Em was a one in a million hound. That he chose to spend the years with me is very humbling.

I know we will meet again and until then I will cherish our memories. Godspeed Get Em Get Em.
