Sammie (2006-5 January 2013)

After a two day struggle, we lost Sammie last night. We don't know what happened, the vet we saw on Friday thought an intestinal slow-down but given the way things progressed I think perhaps she developed a tumor or something in her throat. I will always wonder if we'd stayed in Delaware, with our wonderful vet who specialized in bunnies, if she would have made it.

Some of you may remember, late in 2006 Gideon went out to walk his dog and found a rabbit in the dumpster, in her cage. Without him she would have starved to death. He could keep her and I was looking for a bunny that would like me. He was kind enough to care for her and then drive her from NYC to Delaware where it was love at first sight.

Sammie was as much a dog as she was a bunny. I can't imagine what possessed some cruel person to throw her away, but she was a loveable, cuddly, goofy little girl from the moment I met her. She raced around like a mad woman, played with toys, jumped in bed with us, and got into trouble constantly. Her most impressive feat was the day I left her out accidentally while taking another pet to the evet--several hours later she had eaten the crown molding! As a historian, she was a challenging office mate since she ate books, but she was always a cuddly little friend. She loved to be picked up and carried around the house and if you petted her on the floor she would collapse into what we called a little puddle of bunny. She loved to visit her pet sitter, our friend in the nursing home, and the neighborhood kids. Our niece adored her.

When we had her spayed, she stopped eating, terrified us, but she pulled through in the end, just fine. Since then, she was never sick, never gave us any worry. But whatever happened this weekend was too much for her. When it was clear she wasn't going to make it, we finally found a vet relatively near by who claimed to know how to properly euthanize a rabbit, so she wouldn't suffer any more. She died in my arms, being petted and talked to. She was only 6 or maybe 7, not nearly old enough. We're in an apartment for the year, so we're going to bury her in the woods--that seems more dignified than taking her to some vet.

Godspeed Sammie, you were very loved, by many people. Run free and enjoy all the cilantro you want.
