Years ago We were honored to be offered a chance to name an unraced puppy.....as KU alumni and basketball fans we chose “Beware of Phog” for his name. He raced 104 times at derby lane ... stakes caliber guy. Many of you cheered us on in the gt “watching and waiting” thread. When his career ended with injury his owner agreed he should spend his retirement being part of our family. We drove to florida and picked him up and he acted like he’d known us forever - our first visit ever to a track and his kennel could not have been nicer seeing Phog off for his new chapter. he suffered from corns and couldn’t take the meds due to a heart murmur...so last October he had the flexor tenotomy surgery - he would walk forever he was so happy. Six weeks ago he started limping. The evet did X-ray and thought soft tissue injury - but meds and rest were not helping as it got rapidly got worse. Our regular vet took new X-rays and with the ability to compare to the pics and confirmed our nightmare — osteosarcoma. We tried to control the pain to no avail.....so we helped him to the bridge on Monday. the walk is never long enough.
