Guest sorenkkg Posted January 19, 2014 Share Posted January 19, 2014 I'm sorry to have to say that our sweet boy Haka passed yesterday. He had been suffering more and more this past year with nerve degeneration in his hind quarters-- we think some sort of sacroiliac issue. he may have also had some issue that was preventing the thyroid supplementation we were trying with him from actually boosting his thyroid numbers- but we didn't do any full-body scanning to try to find what it may have been. He would frequently stand on his rear "knuckles" without knowing it, and he dragged his back paws when he walked, to the point the nails were worn all the way down.He often fell (in the house, outside...even on the carpets we put down for him, or on dry ground). Obviously, the last month of ice and cold weather didn't do anything to help him. He'd started pooping in the house a couple of months ago (he'd been peeing for almost the whole year, but limited to pads we put down) and in the past week, he'd started pooping a few times a day in the house, despite a changed eating schedule, and walking him more often as well. We also had to hold him up when he pooped, or he'd lose his balance entirely and fall. We have 1 stair out front, and he couldn't manage it anymore, so we'd lift him each time. His life wasn't all doom and gloom-- he had a great appetite, and he was mentally quite aware. But he didn't play with his toys anymore, and we just couldn't stand by and watch this physical decline. We worked closely with our vets to help manage any pain he might have had, and to make sure this last year was as good as possible for him. I think when his littermate Aleeya passed last spring, his decline sped up. We are devastated-- Haka was my first dog, our first greyhound. He taught me so much about love, and he opened a part of my heart I didn't know previously existed. I hope he is reunited with Aleeya, and that he can finally indulge his high prey-drive and give all the bunnies and some small doggies a gooooooooooood run around!
