Burpdog
I was so upset taking him in this morning, I forgot to ask for prayers and good thoughts -- they are still welcome. Poor Huston -- took him in for a dental and xray of his mouth because the one side was swelling. Asked vet to xray first and long story short: Huston is now missing a canine Radiologist said there were abcessess Better than a tumor, I know but he is going to be really in pain. Guess no canine means more character. He will show off his becoming toothless mouth in San Antonio at Remember the Greyhound! charbess
Charlotte had ALL her teeth removed due to auto immune issues and she was fine. Granted, we switched from hard treats to rice cakes after she healed, which didn't take too long. The extractions were done over the course of a couple of years, not all at once, but the canines were the last to go and it was a non-event to her (easy for me to say, not my teeth...) Guest pappasbike
My sweet greyhound Brindi had a dental last week with 11 extractions including the 2 upper canines. I felt like a horrible parent. She'd had a dental a couple of years ago and I had been told that her lower front teeth would eventually be lost because of bone loss, but they don't really use those teeth for anything other than nipping at fleas. I've brushed her teeth 2-3 times a week since then and never thought she'd go through this. The first couple of days she could eat some of her regular food ( dry ) but would vomit it up a few hours later. We tried the rice and chicken route but that didn't stay down either. After anesthesia there is commonly a fair amount of nausea, I know I've always had the problem when having a procedure requiring anesthetics. The one thing she would eat and keep down were these Stella and Cheweys freeze dried patties. I have always used these to crumble over her regular food as an incentive ( she's a very picky eater ) but for a few days she got these exclusively. It's now been a week and she's back to eating her regular food with no issues, of course she still gets the freeze dried patties crumbled over the food. But now I'm wondering if these dental procedures should be done once or twice a year to prevent such a serious issue again. I hate the thought of her undergoing anesthesia so often but I was really shocked by the 11 extractions. I feel like i've failed her.
