Guest longdogs Posted August 8, 2012 Share Posted August 8, 2012 It has been a long time since I last posted on Greytalk but some might still recall my sweet little blue girl, Angel, who was notable for changing from being a keen cat-hunter to living amiably with our four cats. That story is probably still in the archives. Angel's life came to an end yesterday after fourteen and a half years. It was a very hard parting for us. Her hind legs had failed and her kidneys were giving way but she was as bright and feisty as ever and was otherwise in beautiful condition. We nursed her through a bad weekend and we realised that she was going into a fast decline. After my experience with her two former companions, I'd promised her she wasn't going to suffer. On Monday she rallied and was more like her normal self, so that was the time we chose. We miss her very much. For such a small greyhound she leaves a very large space. Angel taught us a lot. She came to us as 'foster' after being on the adoption books for many months without finding a home. She was small, quiet, not cat-friendly, and an older dog having spent time as a brood bitch, therefore not in demand. When we got her she had been shunted around a lot without having a home and was in poor shape physically and psychologically. Ironically, she turned out to be the perfect greyhound pet that everyone seems to be looking for - cat friendliness apart. How we ourselves ended up with three non-cat-friendly greyhounds and four cats is a long story I won't repeat here. When, sadly, we lost the other two greys we decided we had to attempt to bring dog and cats together. It took several months to achieve but we made it. She became absolutely reliable and two of the cats were her close friends. The moral is not to be too quick to reject a grey like Angel because you will be missing something very special.
