It's NOT OSTEO!!!!! OMG I am so relieved I can hardly breathe.

*Deep breath*

However, it's puzzling. It's not arthritis, either. The x-ray showed some calcification on his shoulder, probably due to an old injury, but the vet wasn't overly concerned about that. His foot, on the other hand, is another matter. DH said it looks awful. I said,"Well, what do you mean exactly by awful?" and he said it looks moth-eaten :ohno He was sent home with Deramaxx and told not to give it to Merlin for at least 24 hours to make sure his stools are ok and he is not going to get a flare-up from the anxiety of the visit... because apparently Deramaxx can cause diarrhea. The vet asked him to have me call her tomorrow morning.

 So my reaction to all this was... that's it? I need more answers than that. The vet doesn't think it requires surgery at this point. It's not a weight-bearing toe, which would explain why he sometimes manages to trot for a few minutes and then he slows down and has trouble when he's stopped and starts walking again.

I need to run home and check on him right now - I'll be back in a bit. I'm confused - but VERY thankful that it's not worse.

Good news about the shoulder! Zoe has calcifications in her shoulder, too, and it periodically causes issues. As for the toe, that does sound puzzling. Let us know what else you find out. Hope Merlin is feeling okay!

Well, glad for the big relief!!! I assume you'll think about getting a second opinion on the x-rays to gain more clarity? Is it just one toe where the problem is, or does it involve more of his foot? Great if it's just a toe, since if it becomes too problematic, you can just, y'know.... you know how well Beth is doing now even after losing a full weight-bearing one.

Good luck with the Deramaxx ... it's never bothered Beth's sensitive tummy any. You do want to give that one with food BTW.

I have to admit I'm confused myself. Moth eaten is generally the sign of osteo, unless it's a fungal or bacterial infection. You're not in an area where he'd have Valley Fever and other fungal infections typical show up with lung symptoms, but it is possible that he has a bacterial infection in the bone, or there is some degenerative osteoarthritis. My suggestion since he's still there and likely still a bit out of it, get x-rays of the other leg for comparison purposes and send all of them off to OSU. I might also set up a consult with an ortho vet in your area. It can take some time to get an appt with those guys, so I'd do the other stuff in the meantime.

Not that I'm an expert, but your description didn't immediately ring of osteo to me, but I would also be careful not to dismiss it simply because he's had intermittent symptoms. It seems it's a common misunderstanding with vets that once osteo presents the pain only gets worse.

I hope you get some more definitive answers soon. :goodluck
