Slick Heart 2/14/2001 - 7/12/2011

Heart came to us quite by accident. She had been in the adoption kennel for a year waiting for a home. We didn’t take her because she tested not small animal safe. We were told the weekend we stopped by to drop off some fish oil capsules for the kennel that she was going to be PTS (we found out later that wasn’t true) but decided then and there to take her home and work with her as far as Jilly Bean was concerned. That would be postponed because when we picked her up from having her spay surgery, we found out she had heart worms, so two weeks later she started treatment for heart worms and was confined to her crate for 4 weeks. Once she was released from confinement, we saw the true Heart emerge. It only took one snap from Jilly Bean to set her straight and they were friends for life.

She was our sweet, independent girl, quite large as girls go, but not a mean bone in her body unless you were trying to get to her food that is. She never got over her food aggression but other than that she was perfect in our eyes. She gave the sweetest kisses. We’re going to miss those.

Several weeks ago she started not wanting to jump in her crate. I noticed she was a little more quiet than usual but nothing big. Then she lost the strength in her back legs and had two bad falls that caused some damage at the base of her spine, where her tail started. Pain medications and NSAIDS seemed to cause an extreme personality change in our girl. She became extremely fearful of our tile floors. Taking her to the vet traumatized her beyond belief. She wanted to stay away from everyone and then went into crisis where she just cried and paced the floor, making herself sick and ended up at the vet’s for 3 days. We thought she was on the mend and she came home last night. She slept until 3:00 this morning when she needed to go out and then went back to bed. She had breakfast at 6:00 and went outside and didn’t have enough strength to hold her self up and fell in her own pooh. At 8:30 she woke me crying so I let her go outside. She came in and started retching horribly and started vomiting a very thick, white foamy substance. She did this for over an hour when I called Mike and he came home.

Dr. B said anything he could do would be a temporary fix, she would always be in pain with her back and since she reacts so badly to most of the meds they would use, with all the love in our hearts, we decided to free her from her failing body and mind.

We love you baby girl. Life in the Full House won’t be the same without you. Find Emmy and Andy, they’re waiting for you.
