Chad Has Cancer

Long time since posting.

I have actually moved away from my hounds for the past year and a half, and my ex has been taking good care of them. I visited them a month ago, and while both Chad and Lovie are getting older (11, and 12 respectively) they seemed in good health and spirits, both still playing with and chasing their toys, and doing well on walks, even if jumping and stairs are a little tough for them. Then, a week after I left, my ex called me and told me Chad had a limp, and she was taking him to the vet. The x-rays indicated cancer. The vet went over possible options (chemo, radiation, amputation) and we decided to give him some pain meds and see how he reacted.

Everything was great, until today. My ex reported almost right away his limp was gone, and he seemed in good spirits. This morning, on a walk he screamed and his limp was worse than ever. My ex took him to the vet straightaway, and an x-ray showed what we expected, a fracture.

Again, the vet said we can amputate or try chemo, but most of what I have read said this doesn't work, or doesn't work for long anyways. I don't want to see Chad in pain, and am trying to decide the best course of action, especially because if we need to put him down I want to be there and I would have to fly from Hawaii back to the East Coast in short time. I don't even really know that I am looking for advice, but I just needed to put this all out there. The worst part of being a pet parent.

I think, if he has a fracture a decision has to be made in a short time. I am so sorry for this sad diagnosis.

There are many things to look into prior to a decision.

Overall health, how the lungs look, how he does when getting medical attention.

Bone cancer is very painful. A fracture, depending on where it is could be very painful.

I don't know what your "short time" means, but timely care for him is what needs to be done.

We talked it over and after the vet looked at him, and observation from my ex we decided we are going to have to have him put down. I am leaving Hawaii tonight to fly back so I can be there with him tomorrow.

Here is 2 photos on imgur of Chad from a few weeks ago (when he was seemingly healthy) sleeping with his favorite toy after playing fetch with me. And another of him in the car on the way home from the vet today, his front left paw is fractured and he is on pain meds.

This has not been an easy day.

I'm so sorry you've gotten this terrible news about your beautiful Chad, and are making the most difficult of decisions. That suddenness is one of the many devastating things about osteo---sometimes you just don't even know until a bone fractures. Because they are often so stoic, and don't let us know they're in so much pain, we are faced with having to make a heartbreaking decision very quickly. I know how stressful it will be (or already has been) having to fly such a great distance, knowing what you do, but it's good that you will be with him. I know what it's like to lose one when you're not there, even though they are in loving hands, and am sending much sympathy.

So sorry to hear about your Chad. We had to make that decision for our HeartSweet back in 2014. One of the hardest decisions we have to make. May God be with you during this journey and keep your head high and one day you will see her again. HeartSweet looked a lot like your Chad. She was our third greyhound. We are now on number six. We have two at a time. They are carried in our hearts forever and each is very special. Hugs to all of you. We were with our baby girl when it was time also. As she went home, she had lots of hugs and kisses, her favorite blanket and toys.
