Jeff Has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (Imha)

Recommended Posts

Just as an FYI--a transfusion (I'm assuming they would use packed red cells) wouldn't make the PCV % improve too much--perhaps a few %'s. At 28% Jeff really isn't in the danger zone. Just as an example my girl didn't get transfused until she hovered around the 15% area. I can only assume that's why his vet is just monitoring his red cell count at this point.

Yep. Thanks T, I knew that but was just wondering if it had been discussed further.

Vet called - unfortunately I was out with Vonnie and he didn't call my cell. Message said Jeff was down to 25%, not a big change (2%). He said he wasn't worried, and would call in the morning.

I of course am worried, though he did say at the start that Jeff might go up and down, but I know they will call overnight if things head down much further, and also I will be there in the morning.

I asked when I was down there today when they would transfuse, and they said there wasn't a specific number, in that they likely wouldn't wait as long as other breeds because he is a greyhound, that they are monitoring his heart and respiration rates carefully. If he needs it, they will give him packed red blood cells. He seemed brighter to me than yesterday, which is good. His poop was formed and it looked a bit less orange, also both good. I am very anxious to know what his value will be this evening!

Vet called - current value is 21% :( He wants a cell count as he thinks it's possible there is a lab error. The good news is that Jeff is not showing clinical signs, and so they are holding off a transfusion for now. That could, of course, change overnight and if so they will call me.

Assuming no change overnight, they will recheck PCV in the morning and the vet will call me "first thing". If the % really is going down, he might add Cyclosporine to the drug mix.

Because Jeff seemed better to me today than yesterday I really was hoping for better news. Hopefully there really is a lab error.

agh I hate to see you on this roller coaster of PCV values :hope

based on my very recent experience, 15% seems to be a sort of threshold.

Glad to see 26% for your boy :)
