Guest Symphony7
It was his birthday, and I had been holding his ashes to spread in his pasture until yesterday. I didn't want to spread them in the cold, dark winter. It was a beautiful evening, and we took him back to his favorite spot in the pasture (behind the trees in the back corner). I was devastated when he died, and it was the same pain letting him go last night. But now I feel as if I've finally kept all my promises to him...I promised he would never be sold, I would keep trying to save him from the sinus tumor he had, and he would never have to leave his pasture again. He really hated moving around, and he got very attached to his field, and you could tell just how happy he was. We bought him in Las Vegas while we were stationed there. We rescued him from standing in a pipe corral for two years without coming out. When we moved him back east he was terrified, he had no idea what trees or grass was. He dropped a lot of weight and we thought we'd lose him then. He bounced back, started eating, started living. Eventually he got to the point where he wanted to stay out all the time, he didn't want to go in the stall, he loved his new freedom so much. Then the nosebleeds started happening, we tried so hard to find a diagnosis...for three years we got one wrong diagnosis after another. Finally a vet told us it was guttural pouch mycosis, and we thought we would lose him then, as it is fatal if no surgery is performed and the surgery was $6k. We took him for a second opinion and found his wonderful surgeon who told us it was a sinus tumor. We opted to leave it, thinking he would have more time if it was slow growing. Less than a year later, we realized we needed to act...the tumor had tripled in size and was pressing on his eye. So, we had it removed. He had a terrible infection in his sinus, and we were afraid it had spread to the bone...and I thought we would lose him then. But his wonderful home vet stitched his head back together and we spent about 3 months flushing his sinus and praying, until finally the wound closed up and the drainage stopped! I was so relieved. And for another year I felt like we were past all of it. Then the drainage started again, and I was so torn on what to do. I was afraid he would get to a point where he was suffering but I would have to decide whether his quality of life was any good. He was so happy all the time, even with a draining sinus. I remember the night before he died I sat on my couch and cried because I just had a feeling something was going to happen. The next morning I woke up to my phone ringing and a knew. We got to the barn at 6:15 am and he was colicking badly. I started walking him, put a blanket on him because his temperature was down to 97, and called the vet. The vet was there by 7:00. By 8:20 he was gone. He waited long enough for my mom to get there so we could say goodbye and then the vet put him down. He had gone into shock, and even if we could have gotten him to his surgeon 45 minutes away he probably wouldn't have made it to the operating table. He fought for a long time, and in the end he made the decision for me. I miss him every day, he was my heart horse, my best friend. I love you Lucky. You would have been 23 yesterday. I always thought you'd make it longer, but you stayed with me when I needed you most.
