He was 11 years old and he became part of our lives about 8 1/2 years ago after adopting him from a fantastic rescue group here in Ohio. Rex became ill very suddenly and went downhill rapidly. He had always been extremely healthy with a hearty appetite and loved to smile and nuzzle. He stopped eating just the other day and began to weaken on yesterday, Christmas Eve. We rushed him to an emergency vet hospital near our home that is open 24/7 365 days a year. He had internal bleeding from his stomach and it was determined he had cancer. We made the decision not to put him through extensive surgeries and treatment. The vet told us that we made the right decision as Rex's condition and prognosis was very poor. We had the vet put him to sleep and we stood beside him and held him until he took his last breath. It just doesn't make sense how he could have gone from being active to dying in just a matter of days. I am so heartbroken. Will the crying ever stop? I want to see him roach on the couch and to have him rush dowstairs to nudge my hand to pet him and for him to nuzzle me. I love him dearly and know that I will see him again. Thank you for listening. I've never posted before but I've been a faithful fan of this site and have enjoyed reading all of the fun posts and seeing the pictures of other greyhounds and their unconditional love of us humans. Wendie Posted December 26, 2012 Share Posted December 26, 2012 I've been through that same scenario and seen it happen so many times at the vet clinic I work at - they don't seem to have any symptoms of these horrible internal cancers until it's too late. They're fine on the outside until they're not fine at all. It really sucks and I'm so very sorry.
