Guinness is gone-

2742933340105367259zHBKjc_th.jpg

My wife was able to leave work and meet me at the vets. I walked him outside petting him, and reminiscing with him about the times we shared, gave him butt rubbins, then hung out in the car till she got there. We went in, the vet explained that he had stomach cancer and it was so bad that there was no curing or removing it, ending his pain was the best thing to do for him (the mass was growing so fast since Monday, today's x-rays had shown an amazing amount of growth in just four days that almost completely filled his stomach, and he had lost even more weight) and we made the choice to be there and hold him while the vet gave him the shot. The option was given to not be in the room, but I'll be DAMNED if the last thing he saw and knew was being scared and surrounded by strangers.

He went with me kissing and petting his head and looking into my eyes, and my wife was right there petting him and telling him he was a good boy, and was loved..

Either tomorrow or Monday, his ashes will arrive, they will call, and I will go pick them up. I plan on spreading some in places we had been, like camping in Pinkney, at my parents house, and at various friends houses, and I plan on keeping some for ourselves in some kind of container. I know I will do a painting or two of him, but it will take some time, perhaps years. I have already done a few drawings and paintings of him since I had gotten him, but now that he is gone, any artwork I do of him now is in tribute, and I need to make sure it is done to the utmost of my artistic ability, I owe him that.

He helped me grow as I helped him grow. I watched him go from a shy skittish dog to one that while still apprehensive sometimes, one that WANTED to approach people - at best a biscuit would come of it, at worst a butt scratching. He went everywhere with me; camping, holidays with families and friends, and at the first date I had with my wife...everything had to get sniffed wherever he went, objects and people...

We noticed last Friday he didn't want to eat or drink, and turned down biscuits, something he NEVER did in six years of him adopting me. I called the vet, we weren't sure if it was just a bug, and they said to take him to the E-vet if it got worse, and to bring him in Monday when they opened to check him out. It didn't seem to get worse, but didn't seem to get better either-Monday's x-ray showed something, but they couldn't be sure, and not having the money for an ultrasound, they had me bring him back in today for another x-ray to see if anything new or different showed up...I'm in shock..I've done so much crying the past week worrying about him, and now I keep bursting out in howls of pain...

I know it was the best thing for him, keeping him around on pain pills while he wasted away would have been cruel, but it hurts as bad as any death I've experienced before..

I am so sorry. It sounds like you gave him a great life, and in the end you did all you could for him, and were there to ease his transition, even though it would be hard on you.

I'm so sorry that your "puppy" Guinness had to move on to his last journey. Its so hard to fathom saying goodbye, especially when it sneaks up on you. The pain we feel at saying goodbye is so well worth the joy that they give during their time with us. He rests well in your heart and memories and, soon hopefully, in a painting. He was loved and charished.
