I don't even know how to start this.....you shouldn't have to say goodbye to a 7 year old, and I will always regret that with all of the testing and all of the consults, we couldn't find what Maya's problem was. But, I'm thankful to Dr. Miller and also to Dr. Couto, for doing all that they knew to do. It's was a hard 6 months for my girl, and I'm so sorry for that......I hope she'll forgive us for not being able to "fix" her.

Maya came to me as an emergency foster in November 2011. She'd been adopted out as cat safe to a home with cats, and boy had she fooled them! I'd just lost Piaget and Mirage was an only pup, and since Maya had done well with another male greyhound, a friend from GPA asked if I'd foster her with Mirage for the holidays. I was hesitant, but after some heart searching, I agreed. Maya was a heart healer for my DH, and we adopted her right before Christmas and hung her stocking on the fireplace next to Mirage's to make it official!

I'll always feel that Maya came to me to teach me patience......and persistance. Nothing was easy with Maya......that girl really made me work hard for her! But, it's the things you have to work the hardest for that become so special. She was definitely a cat zapper (I'll never see another cat without thinking of her!), a toy destroyer, and a very quirky, sensitive, sweet girl, who gave good kisses. We're really going to miss our stripey girl...... our time with her was much too short, but I hope she always felt loved.

Here's a few pics of my beautiful Maya - I hope she's at the Rainbow Bridge running like the wind, and chasing all those things she always wanted to catch so badly! You go, girl! :gh_run2

I'm so sorry. I guess I haven't kept up with the Health forum; I had no idea that Maya was ill. I'm sorry you weren't able to find a treatment for your sweet girl. :(

I'm so sorry for your loss; 7 is far too young and I know it must be especially hard when you don't have clear answers. Rest well, beautiful Maya.

My heart is breaking for you. Too young, too little time together. But the time you did have was the best of Maya's life, and she taught you well. In the photo of you together, Maya looks so proud to have you as her mom. :heart I am so very sorry. :grouphug

Lisa, again I am so sorry. I know how difficult its been not getting answers these last several months and I'm so sorry you weren't able to have more time with her. I hope it brings you some comfort eventually that you truly did everything you could to try to diagnose and treat her. Please pass on ky condolences to your DH as well. Maya will be missed. She sure was one beautiful girl.:grouphug

Absolutely heartbreaking. I lost my heartdog at the age of 8 years also to an unknown disease. I tried so hard to make her better-we made many trips to Ohio State to see Dr Couto and Dr Urie--but, like your girl we weren't able to save her. It's a hard pill to swallow and it's taken me years to accept this but, some things just can't be fixed. Makes it all the more important that we love them as much as we can while they are here and to have the wisdom within our hearts to know when to let them go no matter how painful it may be.

I know you loved her with all of your heart and I'm sure your baby knew that too. Many hugs

She was so beautiful, and so loved. You and your DH made a place where she could be herself. Grossly unfair that you didn't get to enjoy each other longer.
