We used Artemisinin for Charlie. If I recall correctly it's recommended to cycle it and I believe we were 5 days on, 5 days off. I have read that some do 3/3 or 7/7. There was a Yahoo group for this and they discussed all these points.

We use it with Dude as part of the metronomic protocol (formerly) recommended by Dr Couto. It was given on alternate days with the oral chemo drug cytoxan, and the nsaid piroxicam every day. We did not do the cycling as described by Kyle above. It's fairly cheap and easy to come by, and Dude had no issues with it. It's one of those "can't hurt, might help" sort of supplements.

The trickiest thing is that it needs to be given on an empty stomach, in the morning, with a high fat, high protein food like peanut butter to be absorbed properly. I ended up putting it on a spoon of peanut butter and keeping it on my nightstand overnight. I would wake up at 5 am and give it to him and then go back to sleep for a couple hours so we could get up and eat breakfast on schedule every day.

greysmom, your Dude is my Barbie's (Gable Bombardier) brother. I too am interested in the Artemisinin as our Barbie was diagnosed on Tuesday with OSA. So many things to try and go broke over. I don't want to give up hope.

What was/is the success found with it?

Gotta love a Gable Oscar baby!

It showed some success in shrinking existing tumors and decreasing the growth rate/new tumor formation. But not enough to use it as an effective therapy for treatment in and of itself. Piroxicam also showed some effects on shrinking tumors.

I know I've been terrible at providing updates (life has been CRAZY lately, to say the very least), but if you could send some positive thoughts Diamond's way tomorrow (Wednesday), I'd really appreciate it. She's going in for her third chemo, and they'll be doing x-rays of her lungs and probably her remaining back leg. She's generally been doing REALLY well, but she's having some problems with that leg. Her Oncologist and her physical therapist think it's a strained muscle, but since they'll be doing x-rays anyway, I want to have it checked out. We (DH, oncologist and I) decided on day one that we're not willing to risk a pathological break, so if they find anything sinister, we'll probably be letting her go.

We're not ready for that (as if you ever are), and she's not ready. She's still happy and spunky and enjoying life. So send lots of "just a strained muscle" thoughts, please.

It's in Diamond's lungs and her back leg. I'll probably be letting her go this evening.

I'm beyond gutted. Two of my babies claimed by cancer in two years.

I was looking for an update on Jaynie and came across this. I am so sorry to hear about Diamond and wishing her a peaceful passing. I always wish I could offer words of comfort, but I know the pain is beyond comforting.

Had another conversation with her oncologist, and he feels it's not time. Despite the met in her lung and the lesion on her leg, she's not really showing any signs of pain or discomfort. He feels we can continue to manage it and that she still has some good weeks (months?) ahead. So I'm going to pick up my girl. We'll get her burgers and ice cream on the way home.
