Dainty Wag, DW, Waggy Woo Hoo, Pretty Mamma, Wag, Mominator, Dainty, Lady, Mamma....for such a tiny little girl, she had a long list of names. She was a brood mama with at least 35 puppies to her name, including two we already owned when she was ready to retire from being the mamma. We heard she would be available for adoption about this time in 2008. She had one more litter to whelp and she would be retiring. We had quite a few discussions about her. Bringing her home would bring our pack to six. DH was concerned because of her age. Our house is a split level and there are a lot of stairs and hard floors. Ultimately, though, DH couldn't refuse the Mamma :) The pups were due in June. We counted down the days and celebrated when the six of them safely arrived. Then we counted down the days again until we could make the drive from Minnesota to Kansas to pick her up.

It was a rainy Saturday when we left and it was still raining when we got there 8 hours later. We had a little wait until it was pick up time and then we went to get her. In person, she was even tinier than we had thought she would be. She was all of 52 pounds and two weeks shy of her 10th birthday. She had corns and a lump on one hip. Even then, though, she had a confidence and take charge attitude. It wasn't long before she loaded up in the vehicle and headed for her hotel overnight. I think we were in the room less than five minutes before she managed to get herself up on the bed with the boys. It was a sign of how things would go for the next four and a half years. She would see something she wanted, decide how she wanted to get it, and take it. She was our "bull in a china shop" and threw herself into life full tilt.

Over four and a half years, she became an expert camper, spooner, and lover. She wrapped her daddy around all of her paws. He said she wormed her way in, but I think it was more like she bulldozed right on through. She had the patience to regularly deal with corn hulling, the tenacity to keep the household in line, and the spirit like none other. You could watch the wheels turn while she was thinking on how to deal with an issue and she certainly passed that on to her beautiful daughter. Her sweet disposition and desire for physical contact she gave to her goofy son.

About a month ago, she had the first of what we figure to be a series of strokes. Her body was failing her, but her mind and personality remained intact. When our vet saw her Wednesday, he said we could maintain her as long as we felt she was comfortable and could handle her cares. Thursday and Friday were okay days, but in the middle of the night Friday, she began to fail and Saturday morning, we let her run to the Bridge.

Oh a broodie. I'm so sorry. I always marvel at how they may be with us only a few short years but they pack so much love into them that it is as if we had them since pups. But because of you she crossed over a much loved pet that will never be forgotten-her "greyhound prayer" was answered because of you. My deepest sympathy. :grouphug
