I had a similar experience with lymphoma in my cat. She was only four years old though, and had been in excellent health prior. I was given the option to do chemo, which would require weekly visits to a specialist vet that was 45 minutes away. During these visits, they would've had to keep her for several hours to do blood tests before the actual treatment. Not to mention, it was a huge financial risk because the chemo cost thousands of dollars with no guarantee that it would even be effective. The vet explained to me that (at least in cats), lymphoma can only be managed, not cured. So the chemo would just be buying time until the inevitable. It could go into remission for months or years, but it almost certainly come back. In the end, I decided it wouldn't be fair to put her through it. And it also wouldn't have been fair to my other pets if I maxed out every credit card for a shot in the dark. I am sad that things happened that way, but I never regretted not doing the chemo. We did try the prednisone, but it made little difference. She died at home about a month after her diagnosis. I took some comfort in the fact that she passed very peacefully with her companion, Walden, and me by her side.

Lucy, what type of treatment options you pursue for Jabari is a very personal decision. But in the event you decide not to go through with the chemo, it doesn't mean you're giving up on him, or that you love him any less. There are things that happen that are way beyond our control, and we have to make the best decision possible for our pets. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I'm sorry you and Jabari are facing this.

Everyone's situation is different, but I will tell you that the one thing I regret in Batman's illness (different cancer) was giving him chemo. There was no chance of a cure in his case; there was only a small chance that the chemo would shrink his mass and make him more comfortable for a few extra months.

I gave only one dose (oral). It didn't make him sick. It wiped out his white count, so we had to give antibiotics. And for the first time in his life, the antibiotics made him sick. It was only for a few days, and we luckily had several good months after that. But I came away feeling that I had stolen from him some days that could have been good ones.

Will be keeping you two close in my thoughts.

Oh Lucy, my heart goes out to you. I'll be checking often today to see if there is an update.

We all know how much you love Jabari and would never question any decision you make regarding his care. Every situation is different and there are so many factors to weigh. You know best what will be best for you and your boy.

I'll be thinking of you and your guys today.

I'm sorry to hear this latest update Lucy. I have no advice but having just gone though something similar with Cody I know how helpless you feel.

Thanks everyone :grouphug

The vet seemed somewhat optimistic bc the lumps are soft & she said lymphoma usually presents as big hard lumps. But she didn't really have any other explanation for what it could be. She took samples but won't hear back until early next week :( also did another CBC to see where his platelets are at. He's starting on an herbal supplement that is supposed to help boost the immune system & give him some energy. So we wait...

Lucy is it only his neck lymph nodes swollen? I ask because that was all that was swollen at first and then 3 days later the ones in his chest popped up and my regular vet said there was no way the e-vet would of missed those, so it might be something you want to keep looking out for.

This probably is somewhat good news! My cat's one lymph node was golfball-sized and very hard to the touch.

Thinking of you both and hoping for a more manageable diagnosis... :bighug

I treated my first greyhound at age 11+ for lymphoma. It bought him 15 more months. The last few months weren't great months but most of the first 13 were good. He would feel pretty tired the day after a treatment but overall he reacted very well to the drugs. In chemo with dogs my vet described it as not trying to erradicate it but just kicking it back. What I called buying time.

You know your boy the best..and you will do what is best.

What beautiful memories of his show dog days. How did you end up with him Lucy? I can't remember.

One of my greys had lymphoma and he looked like he developed a bad case of mumps overnight - just like your baby. This was before there were any thoughts about doing chemo for our animals. Keeping and your fur baby in my thoughts and prayers.

Just wanted to let you guys know Jabari died today. Unfortunately I am in NYC :weep but he got amazing care from my friend who has always watched him & I was able to talk to my vet to make the final decision to let him go. It was time. I will write a rememberance post when I get back home & can compose one.

Thank you all again for everything. GTers have been his extended family since I got him almost 10 years ago. I cannot express how much I appreciate that :heart

I just came here after posting to your Facebook page, and now I'm bawling. I had no idea it was also unexpected for you, and that you weren't with him. I know you did everything you could for him, what a heartbreaking decision to have to make from afar - it shows your absolute selflessness and love for him. I'm so sorry. :cry1:grouphug
