Guest Karen Posted April 23, 2012 Share Posted April 23, 2012 In early September 2010, I was given the best gift I had ever received, by a friend I had only just met. It was on that day when my dear baby greyhound that I had waited a year for suddenly came into my life. My husband named him Atari, and for the next 18 months, we watched him go from a spritely five week-old pup who had already been cast off by his own mother, to a fine young gentleman who had just started his "career" as a novice agility dog. He quickly became best friends with both my adult hounds as well as my young sheltie, who despite being friendly, often did not make friends easily. I don't believe Atari ever met a soul he didn't absolutely love, human or canine alike. He was perfect in every way; the light of my little family. ...And then the worst thing imaginable happened. We lost him. Saturday, April 14th, he passed away suddenly in our yard at eighteen months of age due to a heart complication. My husband and I are still devastated from the event, but we are slowly healing. He was our baby. The realization we are coming to is that our home is beginning to feel very empty without the antics of our beloved pup. Our remaining dogs are heartbroken, and my brindle male has become a different dog in his absence. It has made the healing all that much harder. One day, I hope to find another young man who is everything Atari was. I know eventually the right boy will come along again.
