Think Good Thoughts For Fixer

We have a vet appointment at 5:30 this evening. Fixer had been acting fine yesterday, but a few minutes after dinner, he collapsed right in front of me. He was down for about a minute or so (no convulsions that I could see), slowly managed to get himself up, but then couldn't walk. After a few minutes standing, he did take a few steps and then he seemed back to normal.

Nothing has ever happened like this before (at least not that we have observed). He has seemed a little more unsteady on his feet lately. He hesitated to go down the stairs in the dark this morning. When I turned on the light, he went down. I've also noticed that since we got a double-flap dog door, he's had a hard time going in and out.

I'm worried that this is something major. :( We'll get him checked out really good tonight (thank you, Trupanion!) Anyone have any ideas?

Fingers crossed for tonight's appointment. I was thinking seizure but I would think you would see him convulsing so it could be his heart perhaps?

Oh my goodness - I am so sorry. That must have been very frightening. Something very similar happened to Merlin about ten days ago. I am thinking lots of positive thoughts for Fixer.

Thanks, everyone. I'm getting more and more worried about it. Guess I need to stay busy until 5:30 rolls around. :blush

Fixer is getting older...he's 10 1/2 now. He's gotten to be quite the loner and likes to hang out by himself upstairs. I hope all of this isn't connected.

I hope that you're able to find some answers tonight :goodluck My first thought was his blood pressure bottoming out for some reason, or maybe something related to blood sugar? As for the stairs and stuff...could just be "old dog eyes"...

You should mention the self-isolating upstairs to your vet also, IMO. Spencer is about the same age as Fixer, and the only time he isolates like that is when something physical is wrong. Some do experience decreased vision with age, especially in low-light situations. But other conditions, like BP problems, also manifest as vision issues. Will be keeping you and Fixer in our thoughts today and hoping the vet figures it out quickly!

Oh, Kristin, I'm so sorry! I'll be thinking about you and Fixer, sending out lots of good thoughts, and hoping you get some answers at the vet appointment---positive answers! It's so hard not to worry in the meantime.

This may not be the case at all, but I remember our angel Nick having an episode like that, which scared us to death. He recovered without any side effects, but about 3 months later, was diagnosed with Addison's. I asked our vet if she thought the 2 could be related, and she did not rule it out. Maybe ask your vet about Addison's, just in case.

Fixer is at the vet's office now. :goodluck

They called to see if we could bring him in any earlier. I guess by the time we got there at 5:30, it would have been pretty late to run tests, X-rays or whatever was needed. DH went home, got him and brought him in. They'll have the afternoon to check him out and I'll pick him up around 5:30.

I really hope everything checks out OK. Thanks for all of the good thoughts. I really appreciate it.
