Guest barkdogs
I realized that these three dear seniors, Carl, Don Juan and Jules, who came up together 15 months ago from Alabama, all died within 6 weeks of each other. I am imaging them meeting again, sniffing each other and then running off joyous and free from the arthritic pain that afflicted each of them in their last years. Today, after a long battle with Immune Mediated Poly Arthritis, during which she did have a few weeks of remission, Jules was ready to go. For the last 2 days, she had pain that wouldn't leave her and instead was just getting worse. The prednisone that initially gave her great relief had reduced her from her petite 60 pounds to an emaciated 40 pounds. Paul and Anthony drove us to Penn earlier tonight, and Jules went in while I held her in my arms. She was very peaceful. Many thanks to Paul and Anthony for driving me, and for being the great friends that you both are. You guys are just the best. Thank you Tina Fuoco, VMD and acupuncturist extraordinaire, for helping Jules stay comfortable and for helping do what I thought was the right thing, but your experience and compassion helped me get there. Thanks as always to the compassionate folks in the ER at Penn. Thanks also to the strangers with the sweet golden who were so kind. And thanks to Dr. Rebecka Hess for your compassionate and expert care of Jules in her final months. Please also take a moment to think of Lee, the lady in Alabama who made the difficult decision to give up 3 of her beloved greyhounds in March of 1020. I know she missed them terribly, and she gave them up because she knew that Paul, Pet Tarditti and I would be able to give them the care that they needed and that she had no resources for. It was a hard decision as she loved her old hounds dearly. It was also a very generous decision as she had fallen on very hard times. She is crying in Alabama tonight along with me here in Philly. When I went to lift Jules to carry her frail, forty pound body out to Paul and Anthony's car for that final vet visit, Anna Lucia came over and washed the tears off my face. Here is Jules enjoying the finer things in life: a concrete mixing tub with fresh, cool water on a hot day. A reminder that best things in life are simple, and sometimes wet. Rest in peace dear lady.
