He could easily be coaxed into song, and was remarkably good at getting other dogs around him to join in. His smile was contagious, and he was the life of our party. Lastly, he loved our daughter. He would greet her with such gentle affection. One of my greatest regrets is that their relationship will not continue to blossom the way we had hoped. Watching him deteriorate so rapidly over the past couple of months has been heartbreaking. DH and I have spent much of that time in denial – denial about the extent of his condition, about the quality of his life, and about how much time he had left. Coming to terms with Stuey’s state of health and realizing that this was the last loving thing we could do for our boy was awful. I have heard that, when faced with a pet that is dying, you will somehow know when it is time to say goodbye. For weeks Lewis and I struggled with whether we would be able to make a decision. Last week, I looked into the eyes of an ailing dog... and I knew it was time. Today I feel heartsick, but I feel relieved. I think Stuey knows we loved him. Run pain free sweetheart.
