mychip1 Posted February 18, 2011 Share Posted February 18, 2011 Two nights ago, I noticed that Dustin's gums and belly were more red than usual. Last night, he wouldn't eat until his food was soft (like his mouth was bothering him)...same thing this morning....Gums still red, eyes and ears red. The part that put me over the edge was that where he pooped, he had a normal movement - but there was a pool of blood with it. I'm in my office at work with him now and heading to the vets in an hour. His color looks more normal now. I went with him earlier - described what happened and she could still see the red rings around his teeth - though his gums and ear color were back to pretty much normal. She believes that he somehow got into poison of some sort!!! I do not have any idea what it could be. I have no household cleaners around the house, he hasn't been near the plants (it was JJ a few weeks ago who played with the orchids)....the only thing I can think is that I started taking hm for walks again...I don't know if a little bit of road salt could have gotten into his system (he does not lick his paws all that much) or if someone had rat poison out and maybe in his sniffing he ate a piece???? I just don't know. Anyway, she gave him a shot of vitamin K and drew blood for platelets. She is looking for a count and/or platelets that are not normal (if that is the case, something else is going on and he may have some other issue....). I will not know until Monday. Anyway, I drive the 15 minutes home, he has a little bit of bloody diarreah in the yard - but not horrible, then he gets in the house and he is breaking out in massive hives as I am looking at him. Rush back to the vet. She says she has NEVER had a dog react to vitamin K - and thinks that this is part of whatever he got into working its way through his system. (She was a vet at the local track - so she is greyhound savy and understands their sensitivities). Part of why this has been so difficult is that post-operative, my Jack bled out from the inside out.....red ears, red gum, red eyes.....though in his case he had puddling pools of bood under his skin.....and bloody diarreah...That was how I lost him... I guess I am hoping he got into something - and that this is not some platelet based disease....Any thoughts would be appreciated.... Thanks for all the well-wishes....
