My Labrador had the tieback surgery at the age of 12 after a crisis episode. I can say that it did help her breathing and quality of life for the next two years, but I think it exacerbated her rear end weakness, which was already compromised due to spinal and hip arthritis. She more and more lost continence and developed UTI after UTI, even though her brain and demeanor was still upbeat and Lab-happy. I wish we could have had a diagnosis sooner, and been able to try medication first.

Yes, vet visit first. He may need a low dose of Prozac to help his anxiety. BUT--GTer George of New England had a boy who NEVER broke the habit, if I recall correctly. A belly band or "mandage" will save your couch in the long run.
