Guest RICHandJUDE
On the 19th of February, we had to put our Santa down. He was dianosed with Osteo in September of 2010. He had his amputation and 6 rounds of chemo. He came through with 'flying colors'. Every 3 months after that we had him x-rayed for cancer. He was always cancer-free. He really never had any problems after the surgery or chemo. He would have been 10 this July. He had a rough life. He was one of the greyts who were abandoned in Guam. After he was rescued and brought to the United States, we adopted Santa at the Greyhound Adoption of Ohio CHRISTMAS brunch in December of 2009. Yes, his real racing name was Santa. He was only with us for nine months when the Osteo reared its terrible head. We got to enjoy him for an additional 29 pain-free, happy months. We would do the same if we had to do it over again. Every case is different. He was fine until February 4th. He started to yelp when he got up and started to move. We had his lungs, back, and remaining rear leg checked for cancer. The x-rays were clean. No sign of cancer. He was put on Novox and that seemed to help. A few days later he seemed to be in a little bit of pain. He was given tramadol and that seemed to help. We thought he had sprained something. We were going to take him to our our specialist vet when I ended up in the hospital. While I was there he took a turn for the worse and was in real pain. We decided that the time had come. He went very peaceably. After the fact, our vets came to the conclusion that he might have had spondylolysis. That has something to do with fusion of the back. Being that he only had one rear leg, surgery would have been real tough as all the pressure would be on the one leg and the back. I am sure glad that he wasn't spoiled.....yea sure, he had steak or chicken with his kibble for every meal. He leaves behind, a greyt named Carmella, and a Beagle named Gidget. Girlsey, our 15 1/2 year old greyt was waiting for him at the Bridge. I apologize for rambling on. Richard and Jude.

Guest bethac
Oh, I am so very sorry that Santa has crossed the bridge. I remember him well - he was at the GAO adoption kennel when we adopted Jazz, our first hound. Santa had the most amazing pointy ears - such a handsome guy. Thank you for loving and spoiling him and giving him all those extra months. I am sure your hearts are breaking. Sending gentle hugs your way.
