Suspicious Spot On Xray Havok Up Date In Post 1 It Is Osteo

Recommended Posts

Mr. Havok has been doing some limping for the last week or so. I had today off and took him to the vet. He did xray and found a suspicious spot on his front right ankle. Sent us home on tramadol and dermaxx. I'm going to see about getting a hold of OSU.

If you guys could keep Havok in your prayers we would be thankful.

Just got the email back from OSU. :(

Dear Cully - Unfortunately, the xrays you sent show a lesion that is consistent with Osteosarcoma (OSA). You will need to make some choices for Havok. Perhaps your vet can recommend a Veterinary Oncologist in your area with whom you can work, hopefully Havok can be evaluated by early next week. You will want to take chext xrays, to look for evidence of masses in the chest, as this cancer can spread to the lungs, which alters its prognosis. If the chest xrays look normal, the best option for therapy is amputation plus chemotherapy. We can provide a chemotherapy protocol at no cost, donations accepted (Carboplatin).

If surgery is an option, we recommend the use of aminocaproic acid (Amicar) to decrease the risk of post operative bleeding (Greyhounds may bleed 24-48 h after amputation). The dose that we use here is 500mg orally every 8 hours for 5 days starting the day of the surgery. This drug is available in pharmacies. If your vet has any questions, he/she can contact us.

We are going in to do chest x rays on Monday morning. Then we go from there.
