He and his siblings were found abandoned by a dumpster in Omaha a few days after they were hatched. They were given to a neighbor of mine to put out on the lake we lived on. All but Lath perished over the winter. Lath joined up with my flock when they spent their days on the lake. He never would join them a night in their pen, safely locked up in my garage. When winter began again, I just couldn't bear to see that poor ducky die like all his siblings. Although I really didn't want or need another duck, I captured him. I named him Lath because he was a skinny little runner duck. Since he was an adult when I captured him he would never bond with me, and I knew that. Throughout his life, Lath would always chase off humans, as long as their backs were to him. If you turned to face him, he would stop and cuss at you. He never liked being held, but he also never bit anyone when he was picked up. I will miss Lath, but he lived a very long and happy life for a duck. You were an obnoxious, foul-mouthed, little jerk, but you were mine. I will miss your spirit, and your unflagging dislike of all humans. You outlived all your unfortunate siblings by over a decade, yet never once forgave me from taking you off the lake that was their doom. Your death saddens me, but I am grateful to have had you in my life. I'm glad age was your fate.
