Neighsayer Posted March 16, 2012 Share Posted March 16, 2012 Meeka and Bubba, both 11 years old, came to live with me in February of last year. Meeka had been fighting kidney disease for years. She was very thin, but very happy. She became the boss hound in the house within her first week here. By this time last year, she was sleeping on my bed every night. Mickey and Suds had to find another place to sleep because they didn't want to sleep with her. She took all her pills without a problem, and usually ate most of her food ( with yummy add- ons). She was in good spirits, but kept losing weight. Between September and December she lost 5 pounds, and another 9 pounds by March. Her creatinine level was 4.5 in December. She remained active and happy until this past weekend. She just couldn't fight anymore. On Monday, for the first time, she didn't greet me at the door. She was in a very deep sleep and didn't hear me come in, or hear the other dogs barking. She had been having trouble getting on my bed for a week or so. On Monday night she gave up trying, and I had to lift her on the bed. She refused her pills in pill pockets and in cheese. She wouldn't eat. I sat on the bed with her during the night and told her that I was willing to let her go if she was too tired to go on. For breakfast she had the sirloin steak that I was planning to eat for dinner. I had to carry her down the steps and lift her in to the truck, but she was able to walk in to the vets office on her own. The staff cried with me as she went to sleep.
