Yesterday we had to say a sad farewell to our Westie, fondly known as 'MacWestie', he was 14 and just had too many problems going on in his frail old body. Mac came to us on christmas Eve, five years ago at the age of 9. He had been my brothers dog but they were moving to rented and also buying a place in Portugal and could no longer keep him. Mac had been an only dog all his life and didnt know what had hit him as we already had 2 terriers and quickly added another and then 5 greyhounds! He had also never known what a 'long walk' was and it took him a while to get used to walks over the fields! In recent months his health had started to get worse and we could see he was slowing down. Recently he stopped eating almost altogether and we took him to the vets on Thursday afternoon. She said he was in pain with arthritis but also suspected there were other things going on. Being a stubborn Westie, he did not want to take his pain meds and by Friday morning he was being sick and it was evident he was seriously poorly. Mac looked very sad and tired, not himself at all, he's always been a happy boy, so we made that tough decision to end the pain he was in and give him some dignity. Here is Mac in happier times, aged 11 and looking white!
