Steak's Seizures

Recommended Posts

"Bored" can be good but, on the flip side making taking him out on the leash in front of the house might help him get a bit more steady by having him focus on walking. There's also something to be said for "getting back to normal routines". I'd keep him away from other dogs or anything that could be "stressful".

Is there someplace shady outside where you could just hang out? Around here, we often go into the carport, which is shady but has a nice view out to the neighborhood, the birds, trees, kids, creek bank, etc. The dogs alternate napping with watching.

Beth, I'm just now seeing this. Bless your heart and bless Steak's heart. I'm so happy he is doing better and has been seizure free for this amount of time. I'm praying that he adjusts to his meds quickly and that you and your family can get rest and know that all of us think you guys are just the greatest!

Hugs for Steak, you, your hubby & your precious girls ... and the other pups too!

My 4 yr old greyhound started having seizures about 9 months ago. It is a very scary & helpless experience.

My vet did not recommend meds at the time, so he is not on anything. I am also in the med field & humans with epilepsy do not remember their seizures. Stone has not been incontinent yet, & does seem to come out of them sooner than Steak. I do have a friend that has a 13yr old lab that has had 40 seizures in her life & she has slowed down as she has gotten older. I really do not have any advice, but have a lot of empathy, as I know how hard this experience is to watch. Keep me posted on any new developments.

A short walk can't hurt, just make sure someone can come and get you if he gets to tired to make it back home. If he likes to play with toys, a good romp in the yard works just as well. If he loses his balance and falls, it's on grass which is soft.

On walking: After Minnie's crisis, she did a couple of days of shorter walks, but was soon back to the regular routine. She walked just fine, it was turning or standing on slippery floors that made her unstable.

We opted to just sit in the yard together. :). He is still falling and bumping into walls. But he was happy to just sit with me outside.

Thank you all for everything.

Just had to post this, Steaky wagged his tail at my husband. Bruce was talking to him and petting his head, Steak was falling backwards and Bruce caught him and told him it was ok, then Steak looked up, kissed him and wagged his tail

Awwww, Beth, this is just the sweetest thing I've read today! I'm so happy for all of you to hear that Steak is holding steady and just seems so happy again. Hoping you all have another restful night. :)

He Played! He Played! I took everyone out this morning and I was scooping the yard, all of the sudden Steak play bowed at me with his tail wagging :D I jumped at him and off he went zooming around the yard, he came back and play bowed at me two more times and then went galloping inside. He was so funny. It was the type of funny that he was when I first got him. I haven't seen that dog in a year. I am ecstatic right now. :)

Altho, he is now holed up in the bathroom because it is raining here. :( I can't help but be a little worried as the clusters started when the weather changed so drastically.

You must feel so relieved to see him being himself again. Really hope that continues!

Totally! I am keeping my fingers crossed that we are on a good path right now. He still stumbles around a bit and last night he flopped over on top of Carmen, who showed great restraint as she growled and moaned and bared her teeth but not once did she strike at him. (She is being muzzled at night now so that I have some peace of mind). I would crate Steak but he starts crying and whining in it and I would crate Carmen but she does the same thing rolleyes.gif. I think they figured out my weakness a long time ago, "make lots of noise so that mom can't sleep and we don't have to be crated" :lol

That's a wonderful picture!

Some of the information on the web links stress with seizures and in Steak's case, stress could be caused by anxiety. But hopefully the meds he's on will also lesson the anxiety. Might want to talk to the neuro and see what he recommends, if anything, for the anxiety.

When will it be two weeks since the end of his last seizure? You had mentioned before that he was seizing every two weeks and with that, it might be the next milestone to reach for ....

I kept track of all of Saint's mile stones also. Hopefully the two medications on board will prevent him from seizing with the weather change. If they don't, I'd call the neurologist and see about changing the dose. Sometimes just a little tweak will give them better control.

My fingers are crossed and saying a little prayer for Steak.

Playing is good! You know he's feeling better and his body is starting to adjust to the meds!

Beth, hearing that he played warms the depths of my soul. Seriously.

I do wonder about the weather, whether maybe you couldn't give Xanax (or in this case Valium) when you know it's going to storm. It's common practice with dogs with thunderstorm anxiety and if the weather is a trigger for his seizures, I would think it would be even more warranted here, but I don't know if there's a danger to using valium too frequently or whether Xanax isn't safe with his other meds. :dunno
