Jabari Is Sick

Recommended Posts

Jabari is no better, maybe a little worse :( He's still peeing frequently but it has just become a part of daily life since no cause was found and the abx did nothing.

He has been crying out occasionally when I pick him up and touch his shoulder/neck area. He has also limped a few times on that side, and is not as energetic on walks. But whenever I go to check him out, he acts fine. It is sooo hard to tell with him, b/c he can be SO dramatic about little things, but then stoic about big things. We have lots of little pokeys (burrs) in the area by my house and if he steps on one he holds up his leg and screams so loud you'd think he was dying. Same with dremeling his nails. And he is still goes totally nuts barking and lunging at the dogs in the neighborhood, so he does have some energy.

The internal med specialist wants him to get a chest xray next, which I have been holding off on, but I just made an appt with my regular vet to talk to her about it. I want her to check Bari over again and make sure I'm not missing anything. He is looking even skinnier and eating more than 3x his normal amount of food. :(

I'm just now reading the posts on Jabari and it sounds like I could have typed that story!

Having almost the same issues with our 12-yr old Grey. Yep, was down to 54.5 lbs and seemed to have lost the weight pretty quickly. His normal weight has been more around 65-70 lbs for some years. He has always been a picky eater but really was turning up his nose to most anything I tried. Off to the Vet we went and did complete blood work, which was pretty normal. He has had somewhat of a cough/gag type thing going on but chest x-ray looked normal. Referred to another clinic to get an abdominal ultrasound, which pretty much looked normal but for a small thickened area (no definitive explanation). The only thing that is really showing up in protein in his urine. I contacted Dr. Dodds and she has been helpful in that this is probably not a thyroid issue and she said these test results are not all that unusual in an older Grey. She suggested what food to feed and agreed with the BP meds to keep the BP down in the kidneys. She also recommended Pepcid (20 mg) twice a day, which we are doing. His appetite is still hit and miss and he still looks very thin. However, he is still alert (for him) and gets excited and enjoys his daily walks. Can't say I notice much improvement with weight gain. So, all we know for sure is that he dumping protein in his urine and I am trying to follow Dr. Dodd's instructions. She did stress *no ID formula food*!! I have been feeding Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato with some canned also. I did try the canned, green tripe with his kibble today and he at that right down. Past 3 days, he has probably only eaten 1 meal each day.

I have had this discussion before and am trying to find out what other Grey members suggested in the way of supplements. Vit B, I think.

Hope we can all come up with some answers.

Guest FullMetalFrank

I know this is a long shot; but the drinking and peeing and losing weight thing sounds a LOT like what Frank was going thru a couple of years ago. In Frank's case, it appears that thyroid was the cause and he was presenting atypically. Frank has been on thyroid supplement ever since and the PD/PU and unexplained weight loss have never reoccurred. I didn't read all the posts to see what tests Jabari has had, but it might not hurt to mention. Hoping the little sweetie is feeling better!

Thanks so much everyone. The internist did mention that they ruled out a thyroid problem. No protein in his urine & blood values ok. I think she mentioned more in depth bloodwork though, which I will ask about at our appt on Saturday. Luckily his appetite is still great at this point.

I really appreciate all the good thoughts, I am starting to get very worried. Jabari is my everything.
