  1. I wonder if the pet shop is selling Italian Greyhound puppies?
  2. What a great story. Thanks for sharing.
  3. Aw, she looks sweet! Congratulations. What shelter did she come from? I'm just curious if it's one I volunteered at in NC, though I guess it's a bit closer than 3 hours away.
  4. I'm so sorry. I hope you guys still have many good days ahead. Coltrane died of a soft tissue sarcoma, as well. It does suck!
  5. Congrats on making it to 14.5! That's impressive. I think other posters gave good ideas on pain management, so I don't really have anything to add on that front. I want to say this delicately, but Darcy is presumed to be the dog that hurt Bonny, correct? If so, I would never have her unmuzzled with your other dogs. I would either keep her in an X-pen or muzzled. My fear would be that she could still start a fight and hurt one of your dogs or you & your DH when you try to break it up.
  6. I just called the vet & asked the receptionist. She said she'd have the vet fax the Rx to Costco. Very easy and not awkward at all.
  7. My borzoi did the same thing with a lemon cake I made for my DH's birthday. Silly tall dogs! Hope your guys are doing okay.
  8. What have your tried so far to get the dogs to sleep outside your room? We used to live in a split level with our bedroom on the top floor. Our basement was a walkout with no stairs. After Sahara was diagnosed with cancer, we worried about her getting hurt on the stairs because she would often jump the bottom 3-4 steps. We had three dogs at the time & just set up a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs. Prior to this, all three dogs generally spent our work day (by their choice) in the basement family room. They adjusted quickly to spending the night down there as well.
  9. I am sorry you are going through this. I hope your vets can give you some guidance. I agree with the others that you will need to make the decision sooner rather than later. I would be concerned about controlling pain from both the leg & his brain tumor. FWIW, I wouldn't even consider an amputation on a dog with a brain tumor.
  10. Atlas (my picky eater) also has never willingly eaten a heartworm tab. I always have to push it down whole. We used to use Sentinel.
  11. The Westie we had when I was growing up did it. None of my hounds, though!
  12. My greyhounds chased our cat in the backyard in a similar incident. It was so scary and I was shocked our cat could run so fast. Anyway, once everyone was indoors, there was no change to their interactions.
  13. I've trimmed all my dogs' nails, until we got our borzoi. He was very scared to have us even touch his feet, let alone clip his nails. And of course, they were long when we brought him home. We took him to the vet monthly for trimmings. After a year, I tried doing it myself again and he let me. So using the vet for trimmings was a temporary measure until he was comfortable enough with us.
  14. Are you flying out of PDX? When I moved cross country this summer, my ILs flew with my cat to PDX. Alaska Airlines told us that PDX very strictly enforces the pet certificate requirements. Flying out of NC, no one cared about the cat's health certificate. After landing at PDX, they stopped BIL and checked all the cat's paperwork. Not sure how being an ESA could affect the requirement, though.
  15. I'm so sorry! I'm glad you are increasing her meds & I hope it gives her some relief. My Sahara had a soft tissue sarcoma that invaded the bone in her wrist. She also acted fairly normal, just limping and then tripodding. Once she stopped putting weight on her leg (with max pain meds), we made the decision to let her go. We were worried about her having a catastrophic break and also that she was in pain without it showing outwardly. It took awhile for the tumor to progress, but once it did, it was very quick.
  16. The poll won't let me submit my answer because I wasn't going to answer question #2. I believe that my 3 year old healthy greyhound had no bloodwork done before her dental/spay. My 7 year old kidney-damaged dog had both bloodwork & a urinalysis before his dental (neutered years before). I can't remember what was covered in the bloodwork, though. I paid $95 for my borzoi's bloodwork in July. That was in NC, unfortunately vet care seems to be more $$$ where I am now. ETA: The collie rescue and Pyr rescue I volunteered with in NC also did not do routine bloodwork on all adoptees before spay/neuter.
  17. I mix Mighty Dog in with my borzoi's dry food. He's really not a good eater, but he usually shows more interest with the Mighty Dog.

    Pudge

I am so sorry you lost your sweet Pudge.
  19. I've found yelling and stomping my feet at approaching dogs to be pretty effective. I would kick one if it got too close, as well. I say "No! Bad dog!" in an authoritative voice, and (knock on wood) it has stopped all dogs from getting too close. It also makes the owners hurry a bit more when you act like this. My borzoi gets into his high prey mode with some small dogs, so I don't want to risk a bite or worse if one of the dogs approach. Our neighborhood has generally friendly, and sometimes territorial, dogs. If a dog was intent on attacking, I don't think yelling would make a difference.
  20. He is very handsome. Glad he's settling in well!

    Unka Lee

I'm so sorry for your loss.
  22. Coltrane had the same thing. Sometimes the hair loss wasn't quite as noticeable.
  23. Sahara had an elbow pressure sore that wouldn't heal. Luckily, we did a culture and found it was a staph infection that was resistant to most abx. It healed up fairly quickly once she was on the correct meds.
