  1. Yay, congratulations! I hope you have a lot of fun with her! She's beautiful.
  2. I think the glucosamine tablets really helped Coltrane out whe he was 11. He also stared getting longer hairs growing between his toes. Or maybe they were always there and I never noticed until he had problems slipping on our wood floors. Keeping them trimmed and also putting down rugs made a difference.
  3. Welcome! I had a greyhound named Coltrane, so I am excited to see a Coaltrain. Enjoy your new boy!
  4. I'm so sorry Ducky! I always loved that first day picture with Rosie pouting in the background.
  5. I really didn't worry about it. I thought the stress of having the sick/dying dog in the house was a bigger deal than showing favoritism. I did try to still take Atlas out for walks, sneaking out on Coltrane once he was unable to go. Maybe try giving Henry a teaspoon or so of Murhpy's special dinner with his regular food? I'm sorry you're going through this.
  6. Don't know if this helps, but Atlas's coat seems sparser and shorter this summer than in previous ones. His tail and back legs look like usual, though.
  7. I am so sorry! It wasn't your fault; I hope you come to realize that over time.
  8. My dogs (Coltrane & Atlas) got excited and a little confused when they initially heard DD cry. Her first days at home, she cried so much that they started ignoring her for the most part. Oh, and I wouldn't worry about the smells before bringing your future baby home. We took one of DD's hospital outfits home for the dogs, and they couldn't care less about it. I told DH they would've been more interested if a puppy had worn the clothes! A different human smell wasn't too interesting.
  9. I am so sorry for your bad news. Based on what you wrote, it sounds like he's not really a candidate for amputation. A consult with an oncologist to review palliative care options may be helpful. I know the osteo thread seems overwhelming, but the first post has a lot of good information. :
  10. Oh, I forgot to mention - Atlas got much more overstimulated and likely to lunge when walking with our greyhounds. So for awhile, I did two separate walks. He was also more likely to lunge at the squirrels if he'd recently seen (and gotten excited by) another dog out walking. Have fun with your obedience class!
  11. Atlas is good with cats, but terrible about the rabbits and squirrels in our neighborhood. A few times he lunged to the end of his leash and flipped over backward. It was pretty scary! He got a lot better after I took him to an obedience class. During our walks, we would practice sit, stay, down, look at me, and leave it. It really helped him focus instead of flaking out about the squirrels. A few times, I did have to just change directions in the street to break his focus on them.
  12. My greyhounds were pretty easy going. I think they could've lived happily with any friendly dog that didn't badger them to play all the time. They both enjoyed my borzoi, especially once he outgrew his puppy antics!
  13. Please be careful! We did something similar with a spooky Vizsla when I was a kid. He started running fast, and my mother got tangled in the long line. I thought it was hilarious when she was drug 5 feet by her ankle, but now I know she's lucky to not have gotten seriously hurt. And the Vizsla was smaller and slower than a greyhound!
  14. Poor Tucker! My parents' vizsla had a similar growth when he was around 13. It was a bit smaller and was removed by a regular vet. The surgery basically cut a V in his lower eyelid to remove the tumor and sewed the two ends back together. He healed very well. Since Tucker's tumor is bigger, it might be harder to remove & still have enough skin to close up. I understand your reluctance to put him through a procedure at his age, but I would definitely consider removing it just to remove the source of pain.
  15. Well, that is incredibly dishonest. No wonder vet insurance is so expensive!
  16. Sahara's wrist swelled to a similar size, though she had a soft-tissue tumor that invaded the joint. Pain was well-controlled with meds, but we found out she had a hairline fracture when we had updated x-rays. The vet said she was in danger of a catastrophic break at any time. We put her down the next day. It is really hard to make the euthanasia decision when the dog still seems happy. I'm sorry about your friend's grey!
  17. Is this it? I was searching for it while you posted, Pam.
  18. Poor Spud! I hope he feels better soon. Does the vet think both holes are from the spider bite? They can be very nasty.
  19. Sahara had no trouble at all responding to her name. She was originally called Tara, so it was basically a seamless transition.
  20. I would go ahead and get it. With all the wildlife rabies cases in our county, I wouldn't want to risk exposure and an extended quarantine. He should be fine, even if he isn't due for a booster until March.
  21. I think this may be it? http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/260532-robin-is-a-total-mess-our-poor-baby
  22. Bil-Jac makes some softer treats. I used the ones made for small dogs when I took Atlas to obedience class.
