seeh2o
I'm so sorry you and Neko are going through this. I cannot imagine how frightening and frustrating this is. I so hope they can figure out what is going on with your boy and can make him well again. You are handling this with incredible grace. Guest Nekos_Mommy
Neko's back at home now but he bled all over the car and has a pool of diarrhea/blood forming under him. When he walks he is hunched as if he's in pain and is very sensitive to touching around his anus (I go him baby wipes to help clean him). He is exhausted and fast asleep right now Sorry for the graphic image I just though it might help to share what we're dealing with... The doctors at OSU have literally no idea what this could be, and have sent out his case to specialists around the country. Our last hope was the coagulopathy testing but that came back twice with an "error". they think at this point that what is wrong with neko's blood is confusing the machine, so there is something wrong with his coagulation, but once again we are not able to find out what it is. It is getting SO frustrating... and to see him in so much pain... If the specialists do not come back with some hopeful ideas we may have to make a decision. it is not fair for him to suffer like this

Xan
I was in tears reading your updates! It might possibly make cleaning him up easier if you use a squirt bottle with warm water in it to rinse, first, let things be wet briefly, then blot up. I can feel your pain for him. This is so hard, to decide what to do when faced with something on-going and mysterious like this. :grouphug My Inspirations: Grey Pogo, borzoi Katie, Meep the cat, AND MY BELOVED DH!!!Missing Rowdy, Coco, Brilly, Happy and Wabi. Guest FawnFan
Poor little guy. I really hope the Vets and Specialists can figure out the problem. You two are definitely in my thoughts. I know you and your team of doctors are working with various specialists around the country. Have you submitted a consult with the other OSU, Ohio State University and Dr. Cuoto? Maybe he knows something - maybe?? Will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Guest Nekos_Mommy
OSU has been in contact with OSU (lol) and they have concluded its not a greyhound specific disease, so greyhound specialists (although still helpful to run treatments by) are not going to be any more helpful than interntal medicine specialists. I took him out to go potty and clean him up and he walked completely hunched and was straining to go to the bathroom. At one point he even was so hunched that he ended up falling on his rear on the grass and just sitting there for a minute he managed to get out a few globs of blood, but thats it. Now he's asleep on the couch and continues to ooze out his hiney If i had a diagnosis I feel like I would be much more comfortable letting him go... Its the "oh it MAY be this one disease that we can manage and fix easily" that is making it SO hard to make the decision based on his comfort.... what if he's uncomfortable now but its just a phase and this is actually a disease that we can fix? and hes only 5... adds to the difficulty... but if no one can come up with any reasonable diagnoses that are manageable and this continues I will call it. he doesnt deserve to be strung through diagnostics, especially if specialists think we'll just find something with a poor prognosis. if it does come to that, I will submit his body to necropsy and hope for some closure from there... tbhounds
I assume they have him on metronidazole and perhaps carafate ( for potential GI ulcer)????
Guest Nekos_Mommy
yeah he's on metronidazole to prevent infection, doxy in case its tick bourne and Sucralfate for his nausea. Yesterday he was also on carafate and on something for pain
tbhounds
Metronidazole is an antibiotic but, it works greyt reducing colon inflammation. Carafate and sucralfate are one of the same--maybe you meant cerenia for nausea?? Hope these meds are able to help-hugs to your boy! It's so hard seeing them so sick :-(
JJNg
Before making a 'final' decision, would it be worth giving the steroids a try? I understand the reluctance to due the potential for GI ulceration, but given the alternative, maybe it's something to consider. If there's an inflammatory or immune-mediated component (which could be associated with his GI signs and diarrhea too), steroids might help. tbhounds
I am surprised they haven't tried pred as of yet--honestly, at this point you have nothing too lose and everything to gain.
Guest Nekos_Mommy
I'm sure pred will be the first thing we try tomorrow.... he's on sulcrafate right now and maybe a student said the wrong name and said carafate when they meant sulcrafate. anyways, the drug i have at home right now is sulcrafate. I'm not sure what their status is on giving him pred, as over the weekend the interns (the one who i was dealing with today) dont have time to regroup with the specialists. I'll be getting a call tomorrow and we'll go from there.
