Kimba Blue Eyes

Kimba came to live with us in March of 2000, shortly after Kevin had by-pass surgery. She belonged to Kevin and his first wife and had stayed with Arleen when they separated. After Arleen passed away, Kimba stayed with Kevin’s son and then was given to a neighbor. Kevin went to check on the house one afternoon as we were trying to sell it. As he walked out of the house, Kimba walked out to the bushes. Kevin had not seen her in a few years and Kimba was never an outside cat. The story goes that Kimba had disappeared from the neighbor’s house the day before. Kevin grabbed Kimba and brought her home. I guess Kimba was about 5 years old or so on that fateful day.

Kimba had never lived with dogs or other cats until she arrived in our home. After a few days of isolation in a bedroom, I said to Kevin, “It’s either now or never. Open the door and let her adjust.” He did and she did. We had two greyhounds Dancer and Dylan, two cats Aggadore and Xena, and one ‘Tzu James Dean when she walked down the hall to greet her new life. I seriously doubted she ever missed her old life.

She was a regal and elegant cat who simply took life in stride as it came her way. I seldom saw her get ruffled by the dogs or other cats. Kimba had striking blue eyes. She had a way of looking, that would just convey her message.

Kimba welcomed 6 more greyhounds Dixie, Donner, Disoc, Dessie, Danger and Deuce, along with ‘Tzu Rocky, and Crestie Freddie, and cat Quinn into our home over the years. She greeted each one of them with her patented blue-eyed look and they immediately respected her. Never was a raised paw needed to keep them inline. She was the feline queen of the house. She also missed each animal when they made their journey to the bridge.

Sleeping in my hair was one of her passions. She would often walk back and forth over my head until I stirred enough to fan out my hair so she could sleep. She loved to hide in cubbie holes that she found around the house. She had found a new cubbie to sleep in the morning we were trying to evacuate from Hurricane Jeanne. It took us an hour to find her and we were not leaving without her.

For the past year or so, Kimba started the slow old cat decline. She stopped jumping on the counter and was eating less and peeing more. We did things to help her and keep her comfortable. The last week or so, her began to change her pattern again. She resumed sleeping in my hair and greeting us with her soulful way. It was her way to letting us know she was getting ready.

This afternoon, I woke to find her under our bed, not moving. I knew her time had come. Sadly, Kevin was at work. I called our friend and vet tech Yvonne and met her at our Vet’s office. In the quiet of the clinic, Kimba gracefully slipped away.
