Aladdin Has Spirometra! Also Low Thyroid. Update Post 56

Recommended Posts

My Aladdin started out by getting explosive diarehhia I took him to the vets and they did a fecal to find out he had ate a lizard due to the type of worms he got and the bacteria. We got a pill to cure this pill was $107.00.(SORRY FORGOT THE NAME OF THE PILL) We also had a complete blood panel done and the blood panel came back normal all within the correct numbers for a greyhound.Aladdin never started to put weight back even on though he is eating and eating very well, he has started to lose weight to where you can see all his ribs it breaks my heart to look at him, I called the vet back, she wants to now do a x-ray of the stomach and saying its a possibility he may have Lymphoma. His energy level is down and he is sleeping a lot. Does anyone have any experience with this or know if there is anything else I can do? We spare no expense when it comes to our dogs but the x-ray is going to be $237.00 is that going to show them what they need and do you think that is the correct thing that should be done next? She says after the X-rays she may then have to send me to a Specialist. I just want to make sure there is not something we can do or if there is any suggestions as to what maybe we could do different.Thank You so much in advance for any and all suggestions and good thoughts for Aladdin.

This is my DH heart dog and I love Aladdin a lot but it is breaking his heart. :(

Please look at the pictures of him, I see him everyday but do you see what I do massive weight loss? I know I am very worried!!!!

Update 2/10/12 We got a new vet that has over 20 years of experience. There prices are a lot more to the normal that everyone is speaking about, they treat many greyhounds in this area, we have a appointment at 11. They are calling to get his medical records now, any and all prayers are appreciated. Aladdin has lost more weight just since the beginning of the week. DH put him on the scales and he is down another 5 pounds. We can not wait until Monday, we want to hear now! It is very hard when you move in a new area but this vet comes with a lot of experience with greyhounds. Any and all prayers is appreciated!

So sorry to hear. No advice....but best wishes and thoughts.

Any chance that the worms resisted the meds?

Oh, Darlene, I so wish I had some advice or info for you! But I CAN send lots of good thoughts and prayers, and you know I'm doing that. I was really hoping that the nasty lizard was the cause of all his problems, and that it was corrected.

I had ask the vet that and she says it would be highly unlikely that the chances that the worms resisted the meds was very slim. Thanks so much for the good thoughts.

My advice is to go ahead with the "x ray." I cannot imagine an x-ray of the belly costing $237--did you mean an ultrasound? Or some sort of scoping procedure?

I'm so sorry about your boy. I think anyone would just be wildly guessing to give you suggestions without any diagnosis on the table right now.

Nancy, I was hoping the same thing, thanks so much for the good thoughts....

Susan, No this is suppose to be for a x-ray that is what she said, I thought that was very high too! The vet is only going by his systoms to make the statements she is making but I guess she is giving me the worse case scernia. But she is really scaring us! :( But I know it def. is something not good at all he is eating very well and he is a walking skelton. It breaks my heart to look at him like this.... Thanks so much for the good thoughts.

x-ray and ultrasound to follow if need be.

Neither should cost $200+ unless your vet is planning to put him under, which is unnecessary except for the most extreme freakouts.

For the worming and this was to get rid of the diarehhia too after the worms were gone, I went into their pet portal from the vets and copied: Drontal Plus, Canine 136mg

Give 1 and 1/2 tablets orally today, and 1 and 1/2 tablets orally tomorrow for deworming. *FOR VETERINARY USE ONLY!!!

Thanks so much everyone for the good thoughts they mean more than you will ever know, we are just in shock and worried, :( he was fine one day the next he was losing weight and now losing more and more..... I am going to ask them about the charges of that x-ray. I went to this vet because when I moved to Ft. Myers they were recommedned to me Dr. Brown has a greyhound, so that made me feel a little better.

You have my prayers and good thoughts.

This pulls at my heartstrings as the losing weight was Peanut's first symptom. We didn't do an ex-ray as she had fluid in her belly and that would only have shown shadows. We did the ultrasound, cost about $380.00, pretty good for around here. Praying that Aladdin's issue is something really simple and easy to fix.

My Jack was eating like crazy and losing weight, we found out he was diabetic only a couple of months after perfect blood work

Thank You that is something I will ask the vet about.....

that does seem like a lot for x-rays, but I know costs can vary around the country. I'd ask anyway. I would also ask if the blood work included testing for diabetes and cushings (probably not). I hope you can get some answers and it is something treatable :bighug

I've never bought Drontal before. For others who have used it, is $107 for 3 pills accurate? I thought Drontal was for worming only. Does it really help with diarrhea? Darlene, I'm confused about this.

when was the last time you had his blood work up done? was it all normal?

if he's eating and not gaining weight, isn't that a protein loosing problem,,, Kidneys or Liver or pancreas or intestinal problem? which would come

up on a blood (CBC) panel.

poor guy, :kiss2 , he does look skinny with his ribs showing.

Remember,, these dogs are AMAZING!! give them a chance to heal and THEY WILL!!!

stay positive with him, and he will try to be positive right back,, they are amazing creatures!

I'd be pushing FAT BALLS,, and extra eggs and anything with higher calories to try and add weight.

and probiotic and other good supplements and after everything with Lazer,, i'd do oils too B)

good luck!!

The Desert Crew will keep him close in our prayers!!!

edited cause my mind came up with more stuff!

more:

is the xray a contrast MRI of some kind? they do that sometimes

PLE is what comes to mind ---- but blood panel will be the first step in diagnosis
